What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Neighborhood Preservation Program

The Division of Housing and Community Renewal provides financial support for not-for-profit community-based housing corporations to perform housing and community renewal activities statewide. These corporations, known as Preservation Companies, provide assistance including, but are not limited to, housing rehabilitation, home buyer counseling, tenant counseling, landlord/tenant mediation, community rehabilitation and renewal, crime watch programs, employment programs, and legal assistance. A majority of preservation companies are also involved in the planning and development of capital projects including new construction and /or rehabilitation of older housing stock. Companies perform this work with the assistance of DHCR administrative funds and leveraged funds from the private sector and other governmental sources.

Population(s) Served

The Weatherization Assistance Program assists income-eligible families and individuals by reducing their heating/cooling costs and improving the safety of their homes through energy efficiency measures. Energy efficiency measures performed through the program include air sealing (weather-stripping, caulking), wall and ceiling insulation, heating system improvements or replacement, efficiency improvements in lighting, hot water tank and pipe insulation, and refrigerator replacements with highly efficient Energy Star rated units. Household energy use reductions and resultant energy cost savings are significant, with an average savings in excess of 20%.

Population(s) Served

As as HUD approved Local Housing Counseling Agency (LHCA), Margert Community Corporaton provides for the delivery of a wide variety of housing counseling services to homebuyers, homeowners, low to moderate income (LMI) renters, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

The primary objectives of the program are to expand homeownership opportunities, improve access to affordable housing and preserve homeownership.

Population(s) Served

EmPower New York provides no-cost energy efficiency solutions to income-eligible New Yorkers. Nearly 160,000 of your neighbors are saving energy and saving money with EmPower New York — without spending a dime. Whether you own your home or rent, a participating contractor will be assigned to you to assess if your home would benefit from free energy upgrades.
