LONG ISLAND COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS

Mission

The mission of the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) is to eliminate homelessness on Long Island and improve the lives of Long Islanders who are homeless or facing homelessness. We are the only agency on Long Island with this mission.

We coordinate the Continuum of Care, a network of organizations, local government, community groups and stakeholders serving the homeless. As lead, LICH coordinates an annual homeless count, establishes and implements initiatives to end homelessness for various target populations, and supports the development of permanent, affordable housing. LICH also provides direct services to homeless and at risk Long Islanders, including case management, housing/benefits assistance, street outreach engagement, an organic community garden for veterans, and distributes clothing, food, toiletries, baby and other essential items.

Each year we help almost 4,000 children with the Supply Our Students program, through which we distribute backpacks and school supplies. We also give 450 children a one day summer camp experience. The children who attend receive new back to school clothing and shoes, towels, bathing suits, and school supplies. Our chemical-free garden, run by and for veterans, provides social engagement opportunities and offers free, healthy produce to Long Islanders in need.

Through our programs, we reach over 10,000 Long Islanders in need. Recently LICH was recognized as one of the lead entities who helped effectively ended Veteran homelessness on Long Island. All of the programs at the LI Coalition aim to improve the lives of our neighbors-in-need with empowerment, dignity and respect.

The Boutique

The Boutique is a place for people who are referred to us to pick out the clothing and other essential items they need.

The goal is to be able to provide everyone with opportunity to get the clothes and items they really need for their well being.

Volunteers and donations are needed year round!

Population(s) Served

Our Community Garden is located at our Community Resource Center and serves the residents of Liberty Village, as well as other veterans in our community of our Garden Club.

During our Garden Club meetings, members decide what to plant and grow while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. The Garden Club welcomes everyone who is interested in gardening to volunteer with us.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes.

The garden planning and planting happens Jan-Nov!

Population(s) Served

Each year the Coalition brings together professional from all of Long Island and NY State to educate each other about current issues facing the homeless. CEU Credits are available for those interested in the workshops. Previous year themes include youth & family homelessness, housing first, serving veterans, and much more!

children. Up to 4,000 back packs with age-appropriate school supplies are distributed through emergency shel-ters, foster care facilities, and directly to children in need.
Backpack Pirates is an annual event where over 450 homeless and at-risk children will be invited to spend a day at a summer camp, packed with many fun games and activities!
