Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Charity Round
The Charity Round is a bi-weekly program that provides food assistance and distributes clothes, blankets, and informative publications directly to the homeless shelters and underprivileged families in the New Jersey and New York region.
Baby Citizen
The "Baby Citizen Program” assists current mothers and mothers-to-be who are at social or economic risk. Its objective is to ensure a healthy pregnancy and life for both mother and baby. Mothers receive information on what they can expect throughout the stages of gestation and the development of their children. LBV has partnered with several medical professionals and schools, including Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, to provide informational workshops and services to mothers. Each family is provided with gifts of baby essential items such as diapers, clothes, wipes, baby lotion & shampoo, bottles, nursing items, formula for the mothers who cannot breastfeed, and informational pamphlets on baby milestones.
Backpacks for a Bright Future
"Backpacks for a Bright Future" is an international campaign that aims to help vulnerable kids excel in school by providing the educational tools that their parents otherwise could not afford. Across seven countries, the organization has benefited more than 25 thousand kids through this campaign. The LBV believes that high-quality education is the key to overcoming social inequalities and breaking the cycle of poverty that so often is ignored.
Everlasting Christmas (Food Baskets)
This is a traditional campaign that the organization runs in the USA as well as across six other countries that are impacted by the work of LBV, including: Brasil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Portugal. During this campaign, food baskets are distributed to families living in abject poverty. It is the conclusion of the educational and social assistance work that the LBV carries out with these families throughout the year. Taking into consideration the hardships faced by many people, the Legion of Good Will emphasizes the importance of solidarity and altruism during this special holiday.
SOS Calamities
Emergency relief program that provides first-aid assistance to help communities affected by disasters with the support of multistakeholder partnerships.
Good Will Students for Peace
Good Will Students for Peace is an anti-violence educational program in schools that aims to instill in students solidary leadership through character-building experiences. We aim to guide them toward a global, peaceful, and sustainable society.
Blue Heart Ambassadors
Blue Heart Ambassadors is an international exchange program that invites youth and adults to provide humanitarian services to disadvantaged children, families, and individuals in communities overseas. In one of the 7 countries or 150 cities where the LGW is preset, participants volunteer in programs and projects that provide critical assistance to those in need, such as schools, community centers, and elderly homes operated by the organization abroad.
ESL Classes
Together with Club Atletico Boca Juniors-USA and the City of Newark, the LGW provides free-of-charge English as a Second Language program to residents of the Ironbound Community.
This course is taught by LGW educators who will teach the basics of English, with an emphasis on conversational skills. Through this course, we assist immigrants by giving them the linguistic tools necessary to carry out day-to-day interactions, such as communicating with bank tellers when trying to deposit a check or speaking to mailmen when trying to mail a package.
ENCCEJA preparatory Course for Brazilians
In partnership with the Consulate General of Brazil in New York and the LBV-Brazil’s José de Paiva Netto Educational Institute in Sao Paolo, LGW offers a free-of-charge preparatory course with video tutorials and in class encounters for Brazilians who wish to complete their elementary or high school equivalency diploma through the Exame Nacional de Competências para Certificação de Jovens e Adultos (ENCCEJA) offered by the Brazilian Ministry of Education.
Family Health and Wellness
The LGW works in partnership with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School to provide low-income families and other members of the community with health services and education as part of their S.A.V.E Women and S.A.V.E Men initiatives. We provide uninsured men and women with access to medical consultations, tests, and screenings, including early cancer detection.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To expand its reach and more fully adopt the successful model it has used throughout South America, LGW recently commenced the largest project in its 30 year history with the potential to improve the lives of 1300 families per year in Newark's high poverty Ironbound District: an Early Childhood and Community Center. The Center will include a child care center for 70 children under age five whose parents are eligible for state child care vouchers, an after school program for 30 school aged children, and a community services center where adults can receive help accessing benefits, job training, cancer screenings and English language classes. We hope to provide quality day care to provide peace of mind to enable parents to find work, to provide a quality early childhood education to give poor children the skills they need to succeed in school, and to meet families' short term and long term needs so they can move out of poverty.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
- Develop and Expand programs that provide relevant services for the community we serve
- Modernize the communication strategies and expand the engagement of current and new supporters;
- Form and strengthen strategic partnerships
- Execute a strong multi-channel fundraising campaign enabling individuals to easily give electronic monetary donations
- Reach out to major donors, companies and foundations;
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
LGW is uniquely qualified to reach out to Portuguese and Spanish speaking immigrants of New York and New Jersey areas, who know and trust the international organization from their native countries as well as from their direct experiences with LGW. The organization was recently equipped with a CRM system that will help develop the relationship and fundraising strategies, both online and offline. We released a new website integrated with this CRM system, which will enable a more dynamic and direct communication with our constituents. We expanded our presence in social media with pages in Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Our concise staff is highly qualified for the positions and we count with a diverse group of volunteers.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As we are advancing with our First Child Care and Learning Center in the USA, our most important achievement for this major project was the acquisition of a property that is the process of being transformed into a model center in the country. We are currently running our most audacious multi channel campaign to be able to inaugurate our new center by 2018. We need to expand the number of donors and supporters to meet this major challenge.
