Mission

Forward in Health is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the health conditions and dignity of the people in and around Les Cayes, Haiti.  This will be accomplished by caring well trained medical and nonmedical people working hand in hand with the local medical institutions of Les Cayes.

Klinik Fonfred, built by Forward in Health over 11 years, is the center piece of our work. The 3,500 Sq.Ft. building is staffed by Haitian doctors, nurses, clerical staff, and social workers. Services provided pediatrics, general adult primary care, and prenatal care. The clinic has digital radiology and a lab offering services unavailable except in the capital of Port-au-Prince.

Population(s) Served

Forward in Health was established in 2006 with a solitary goal of building a primary care clinic in Haiti in order to bring life saving health care to the people in the Les Cayes area. Since the first days that members of Forward in Health traveled to Haiti the need for a permanent medical presence in the Les Cayes area was obvious. This goal was completed in 2015 with the opening of the clinic.

With the help of our partners, Gaskov Clerge Foundation, Forward in Health is managing the day to day running of Klinik Fonfred. Klinik Fonfred provides healthcare to 15,000 impoverished haitians who would otherwise only have access to medical care 30 minutes away by car or a 3 hour walk over very poor roads.

Population(s) Served

Much of the vitality of Forward in Health comes from our relationship with high school and college students. From the beginning Forward in Health has welcomed students 16 years of age and over to accompany us on medical and non-medical cultural exchange trips. The energy, maturity, and empathy exhibited by the students has provided inspiration to all of us.

Many students leave as teenagers and return as young adults with a new view on priorities and a focus on their future. We are proud that most students want to return to Haiti with Forward in Health. In addition the trips to Haiti have inspired careers in nursing and journalism.

Forward in Health has developed a close relationship with Gardner High School. Gardner High has a Haiti Club under the guidance of FIH board member John Gardella, a high school history teacher. The club has provided information to students about the conditions in Haiti. In addition they have supported the FIH 5K fundraiser as well as run their own fundraisers to benefit FIH. Gardner High students have raised enough money to name the waiting area in our future clinic the Gardner High Waiting Area.
