Restoring Hope by Repairing Homes
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Good Neighbors works to address the needs of low income homeowners. We make free home repairs to alleviate low income homeowners from paying for costly home repairs. By making these critical repairs, we help to reduce housing challenges. A housing challenge occurs when a homeowners pays more than 30% of their income towards housing costs. When housing challenges increase, homeowners must choose between make critical repairs, like roof leaks, and purchasing groceries. Commonly, individuals in our community that face housing challenges are the elderly, disabled and single parent households. When we offer free repairs to these individuals, their housing challenges are reduced and they are empowered to pay for food and medicine. Additionally, their house is warmer, safer, drier and healthier.

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Good Neighbors vision is for all people in our community to have a warm, safe, dry and healthy home in Chester County, PA and New Castle County, DE. We do this by providing free home repairs for families who meet the county's low-income guidelines.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
By using volunteers to make the repairs, utilizing discounts for materials and specialty contractors combined with generous monetary donations from our donors, Good Neighbors can utilize and even multiply donations to repair substandard housing at no cost to the home owner. In 2020 we repaired 159 homes by using 178 volunteers that logged 2188 volunteer hours. Volunteer hours were down significantly due to the Covid pandemic.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
With the growing support of foundations, churches and individuals these projects are financed with donated funds so that home repairs can be completed without any charge to the homeowner. We also solicit business partners for discounted materials and for specialized labor to maximize our donor dollars while our project managers work on site to ensure that the projects are completed effectively and efficiently. Because we utilize volunteer labor on many of our larger projects, overall repair costs are minimal.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2020 alone we served 159 households. This is almost 50% higher than the number of home repairs completed four years earlier. There was a steady increase in projects completed over the last 10 years. Our goal for 2021 is to repair 180 homes.
