Northside Center for Child Development, Inc.

Where children rise up and thrive

aka NCCD   |   New York, NY   |  www.northsidecenter.org

Mission

Northside's mission today remains the same as when it was founded in 1946 by the preeminent psychologists, Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Phipps Clark,"...to foster the healthy development of children and families by providing comprehensive, individualized high quality mental health, counseling and educational services to children and families."

Northside distinguishes itself by its strength based perspective and its traditional and non-traditional approach to the issues faced by children and families. Northside Center for Child Development (NCCD) combines counseling and therapeutic work with educational and recreational services to meet the needs of children and youth.

Northside's 110th Street and Central Harlem Clinics, Therapeutic Early Childhood Center (TECC), our Susan Patricof Head Start Center, our Bronx Children and Family Services Early Head Start Center and Fort Green-Brooklyn Children and Family Services Early Head Start/Head Start Center are now providing over 3,000 children and families with ongoing psychiatric, psychological, psychopharmacological and educational services, evaluation and referral assistance. We are not only increasing the number of children and families served but also the variety of services we offer. Northside's Central Harlem Services has a historically psycho-spiritual focus and provides therapy, crisis intervention.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

"All children belong to us. To protect and respect them is to preserve humanity." This is a quote from one of our founders, Dr. Kenneth Clark. It summarizes are overarching goal which is to improve the quality of the lives of those children and families that we work with in order to give them a greater opportunity to reach their full potential and succeed in life.

We provide expert services under the fields of education and mental health to help children and families overcome adversity. Our clinic programs include our Mental Health Clinic, Preventive Services and Home-Based Crisis Intervention. Our Therapeutic Early Childhood Center includes our Early Head Start, Head Start, School Age, Pre-Kindergarten and Early Intervention programs. Our Afterschool program includes remedial tutoring and cultural arts programs.

Northside has been helping children and families in New York City with educational and behavioral health program since 1946. We have expanded our services to 3 boroughs, the South Bronx, Brooklyn and Harlem. More than 1/3 of our staff is bilingual. The average length of service for Northside's department Heads is 20 years.

After 6 months of tutoring 85% of remedial students had a year's growth or more on at least one subtest of Achievement.
Based on an average of 9 months between pre and post test administrations of the ASEBA parents of clients over the past two years reported that the following clinical symptoms were significantly reduced or stabilized for their children: anxiety, depression, social problems, thought problems and aggressive behavior. Children in our Early Intervention program made significant improvement on the Batelle Developmental Inventory moving from significant developmental delay to mild delay at 6 months.
