What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Merkin Hall

With a bold new look by architect Robert A.M. Stern and its world famous acoustics, Merkin Concert Hall’s intimate scale and innovative programming have earned it a reputation as one of New York City’s finest concert venues. Noted in the New York Times for its "reputation for avant-gardism of a cool and cerebral nature,” Merkin presents adventurous work—including many world premieres—by contemporary composers and some of today’s most acclaimed and inspiring performers. In addition to cutting edge new music, Merkin presents some of the best new talents in the classical world, celebrations of musical theater with Broadway’s top professionals, and lively musical reviews for children and families. Merkin also fills a vital need in the New York City musical landscape by providing a welcoming venue for a wide range of performances produced by other artists.

Population(s) Served

New York’s largest community arts school and one of the country’s finest, Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Center provides a multi-faceted music education for children and adults at all levels of skill and experience. For more than 50 years, the school has been giving thousands of people the opportunity to make music and the performing arts a part of their lives, embracing talented toddlers, enthusiastic elders and everyone in between. Both Sunday strummers and stars-in-the-making have a place here, with both individual and group instruction to choose from. More than just a school, Lucy Moses feels like a community, specializing in making the arts fun and accessible with a wide range of classes, performance opportunities and private lessons.

Population(s) Served

Where else can you master math and Mozart? A public school for musically gifted children, Kaufman Center’s Special Music School (SMS) is the only public school in the United States that includes music instruction during the regular school day. SMS students consistently rank at or near the top citywide in academic test scores and regularly win national and international competitions. The exceptional education they receive ensures that they develop the skills necessary for on stage and off. Founded in 1996, SMS represents a unique public/private partnership between Kaufman Center and the New York City Department of Education. As with all public schools, tuition is free to residents of the five boroughs of New York City.
