What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

English Language Classes (ESOL)

We offer low-cost, twice weekly, evening ESOL classes at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. We emphasize practical language skills to enable immigrants manage the challenges of daily life, and communicate in work and social settings.
Our classes are student-centered and immersive; students and teachers speak only English. Lessons encourage active participation by all. Students break into pairs and groups to practice skills. Dialogues, games, role plays, conversation and journals provide practice and help develop confidence. Lessons organized around themes related to students’ personal, community, and occupational lives help them learn useful vocabulary. Advanced students read challenging fiction and journalism and discuss current events. By integrating instruction into practical, communicative activities, we bring the English language to life.

Population(s) Served

Our Spanish classes attract new and advanced learners. They are Centro’s largest source of new students,
who often invite their friends to join our classes. Spanish classes are taught by native Spanish speakers.
Each semester follows a syllabus, with classes divided into grammar and practice. Teachers plan excursions
to movies and plays, and they stay in touch with students by weekly emails. At the end of each term the
teaching team evaluates the semester and plans the next.

Population(s) Served

Our FREE weekly evening Citizenship class guides permanent residents (with intermediate English fluency) through the final steps in obtaining US citizenship: preparing them to (1) complete Form N-400 -- the Application for Naturalization -- and (2) pass the USCIS civics, reading, and writing tests. We customize the class to each student’s needs, combining traditional introduction in US history, government, and current events with test prep. Our volunteer teachers supplement group lessons with one-on-one review for those about to take the test.

Population(s) Served

Our Intercambio program is a unique, weekly, informal get-together of native Spanish and English speakers, focused on strengthening conversation skills. The program is attended by current students and a loyal base of language lovers looking for additional practice. Centro facilitators pair students, suggest discussion topics and lead games. Coffee, tea, and snacks add to a fun evening.
