NEW YORK CITY AUDUBON SOCIETY INC

aka New York City Audubon   |   New York, NY   |  www.nycaudubon.org

Mission

New York City Audubon is a grassroots community that works for the protection of wild birds and habitat in the five boroughs, improving the lives of New Yorkers. We envision a day when birds and people in the five boroughs enjoy a healthy, livable habitat. Our efforts have brought hundreds of acres of city and state lands under protection, helped waterbird populations in New York Harbor rebound from historic lows, and raised awareness of the hazards of light and glass for migrating birds. NYC Audubon is affiliated with but independent from the National Audubon Society and Audubon New York (state).

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

NYC is a vital link in one of the country’s great bird migration routes—a stopover, nesting, or wintering spot for more than 300 Atlantic Flyway species. Wild birds play a critical role in maintaining natural ecosystems, which are integral to urban sustainability. They also immeasurably enrich city residents' lives. Populations of many migratory species are already in steep decline, and climate change is predicted to imperil nearly half of all North American migratory bird species. The city presents its own hazards—which can be mitigated— such as disorienting lights at night (when many species migrate), endless glass to collide with, scarce and fragmented habitat, and predation by feral cats. Birds offer essential contact with nature, which research has shown brings health, psychological, educational, and social benefits. But a connection with nature is missing from the lives of so many urban residents--a deficit that disproportionately affects people in communities of color.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Conservation of birds, wildlife, and habitat in New York City

NYC Audubon works through research, conservation, education, and advocacy, serving all New Yorkers. Our conservation efforts include expanding green roof habitat, wildlife monitoring, and beach clean-ups. Our research involves collecting data about birds across NYC, including waterbirds in NY Harbor, shorebirds in Jamaica Bay, and migratory birds impacted by collisions with glass. Our classes, bird walks, and other educational programs bring the joy of birds to New Yorkers, and inspire environmental stewardship. We give resource managers information they need to conserve wildlife and advocate for legislation protecting birds and the environment in NYC.
