Mission

HMI creates a safer environment for all LGBTQIA+ youth ages 13-24 by cultivating youth co-led programs that are unwaveringly anti-racist, queer and transgender affirming, sex and body positive, anti-classist, healing-centered, liberation-focused, and widely accessible. Our approach to positive youth development is one that seeks to build a loving, supportive community and sense of belonging between LGBTQIA+ youth and caring, dependable adult service providers, where we offer youth the essential direct services and referrals they need to grow. Through our community-centered, innovative, and culturally responsive frameworks of youth engagement, HMI aims to endow our youth members both with a sense of pride and empowerment, and the tools they need to transition confidently into the future.

Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) believes all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential. HMI creates this environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQIA+) youth between the ages of 13 and 24 and their families. Through a comprehensive package of direct services and referrals, HMI seeks to foster healthy youth development. HMI’s staff promotes excellence in the delivery of youth services and uses its expertise to create innovative programs that other organizations may use as models.

Youth Services

Positive Youth Development (PYD), harm reduction and trauma-informed care are the theoretical frameworks in which we ground our programming. Our programs and services are all designed to help young people reach their full potential. HMI currently provides services in areas, including academic enrichment, arts & culture, counseling, health & wellness, job readiness, and services for homeless youth.

Hetrick-Martin Institute believes all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential.

OUR EVIDENCE-BASED, HIGH-IMPACT SOLUTION FOR LGBTQIA+ YOUTH:
• HMI is the only organization providing a community of mental health and wellness services that center the needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth of color.
• Providing services in a community “space” that centers the youth.
• Engaging other community partners in providing programming for our young people to deliver our milieu and increase access to LGBTQIA+ youth across the country.
• Partner with advocacy organizations to inform a robust case for support to expand or complement traditional mental health funding to include liberation-focused healing and harm reduction practices.
• Serve as a training resource for youth service providers all over the world.

HMI has developed an evidence-based, expansion strategy to scale service access and effectiveness for LGBTQIA+ youth, with a focus on Queer and Trans People of Color (QTPOC) as a service provider, trainer, and political advocate. It is informed by our evaluation of HMI’s unique model of program provision, and our more than 40 year experience in youth development work.

HMI is uniquely equipped to provide a safe space and culture adapted to address the physical and mental health concerns of LGBTQIA+ youth and, as importantly, share these practices with other agencies and partners who serve LGBTQIA+ youth. Even during the pandemic, we found that we could sustain a great deal of the programmatic model and practice using a hybrid of limited in-person interaction coupled with robust virtual and telehealth services. What makes this possible is having a dedicated, multidisciplinary team that works closely together.

Our Counselors and Case Managers share identities with our young people and are highly qualified individuals, uniquely trained in various modalities to provide for the emotional needs of LGBTQIA+ youth.

Additionally, to better respond to the needs of our youth members, HMI’s Counseling Team is working to incorporate Liberation-focused healing methods and techniques throughout our programming as part of addressing oppression and harm that our youth members face due to racism, transphobia, homophobia and other forms of harm. Using a trauma-informed lens, we are cultivating a space for joy, healing and resilience for our youth members in the face of great challenges.

Our multidisciplinary team includes social workers and creative arts therapists, with clinicians specializing in verbal psychotherapy, DBT-informed work, art therapy, drama therapy, meditation and mindfulness, and other forms of embodied healing. In addition, HMI staff and Board members participated in the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene “Racism in Mental Health” webinar/training series over the last year. Our plan is to conduct a concerted outreach and visibility campaign in the coming months to ensure our youth members and the LGBTQIA+ youth audiences we engage with through outreach are aware of HMI’s evolving approach to counseling and liberatory healing practices, and the incorporation of an explicit anti-racist approach in our services.
