CANY's mission is to empower people who have endured trauma to rebuild their lives.  Through the use of drama therapy CANY helps children and adults imagine new possibilities, expand their self concept and build the social and emotional tools they need to thrive.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Creative Alternatives contracts with 17 facilities in the greater New York area and Connecticut providing over 1500 groups annually. Facilities include residential treatment centers for abused children, hospitals, addiction treatment centers, HIV/AIDS clinics, safe shelters for victims of domestic violence, Veterans mental health programs and alternative school programs for at risk and troubled youth. Additionally, Creative Alternatives provides trainings to staff at partner facilities and other facilities in the use of creative arts as a therapeutic tool for treatment.

Programs with women victims of violence at domestic violence safe shelters and international refugee centers.

Partnering with several special schools, residential facilities and community centers, CANY provides therapeutic drama groups for high risk youth with a range of behavioral and emotional challenges.   Programs are targeted for specific youth populations, such as LGBT foster youth, single foster moms, psychiatrically disabled youth; youth aging out of foster car;  juvenile justice youth.

Population(s) Served

A range of training programs to teach the use of creative drama interventions to social workers, theater artists, educators, mental health professionals, students. Training programs include one and three day intensive workshops; 9 month Learning Collaborative training model with 4-5 agencies; 9 month Certificate Program.
