Changing the world, one concert at a time.

Mission

Based in New York City, the Stonewall Chorale is the nation's first gay and lesbian chorus. Our mission is to enrich people's lives through learning and performing beautiful choral music, and to nurture and celebrate the community we create together.

The Chorale originated in December 1977 as the Gotham Male Chorus, and specialized in Gregorian Chant and Renaissance music. In 1979, women joined the chorus for the first time, and the name was changed to Stonewall Chorale, the nation's first Lesbian and Gay chorus.

Today, Cynthia Powell leads us as our Artistic Director and we typically perform three concerts each year and make appearances at special events throughout the tri-state area.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

As the nation's first gay and lesbian chorus, The Stonewall Chorale occupies a unique and pivotal space in New York City. We are artists who make music together in support and celebration of the GLBT community. We celebrate our community through song because we believe in the power of music to heal the soul, nourish the world, and bring hope in even the darkest times. The Stonewall Chorale believes in the healing power of music and that we can change the world, one concert at a time.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

In 1979, women joined the chorus for the first time, and the name was changed to Stonewall Chorale, the nation’s first Lesbian and Gay chorus.

We perform three major concerts per year in NYC, offering affordable ticket prices to our guests. We also appear at special events throughout the tri-state area, often at places of worship who wish to offer their congregants beautiful music and a visual reminder that their communities are affirming of all sexual orientations and expressions of gender identity.

We also look to partner with other gay choruses throughout the country, working to keep our community active and visible across the nation.

Members are our greatest asset. In addition to singing with us, our members frequently volunteer to do things like run front-of-house during shows, bring concessions to sell at concerts, and perform in our two small fundraisers every year. Our artistic director is a well-known presence in the NYC choral scene, and connects us to opportunities for exposure and performance.

In 1996, the Chorale received a $5,000 Community Arts Project Award from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. These grants are awarded annually to nine community performing arts organizations based on their quality of musical performance, program creativity, and ongoing commitment to professionalism.

The Stonewall Chorale was the first openly gay organization to receive a CAP award. This grant subsidized a concert at Alice Tully Hall on February 22, 1997 which honored the music and pedagogy of Nadia Boulanger. The program also resulted in a generous grant of $2,000 received from the Florence Gould Foundation whose purpose is to promote French culture in the United States.

In June 2013 The Stonewall Chorale performed at a rally celebrating the US Supreme Court’s decisions on United States v. Windsor (the DOMA case) and their refusal to hear Hollingsworth v. Perry (the California Proposition 8 case). Those two cases combined were a historic step in the fight for LGBT civil rights. The rally was held in front of the Stonewall Inn, the birthplace of the gay rights movement. Speakers at the rally included Roberta Kaplan, the lawyer who successfully argued the DOMA case, and Edie Windsor herself!

In 2016 the Chorale commissioned James Bassi to create a secular piece for chorus and string orchestra in honor of the group’s 40th anniversary. Bassi's groundbreaking work, “A Certain Slant of Light,” celebrates light in the darkest time of the year.

In 2019, the Chorale presented the New York premiere of Quiet No More, a multi-movement choral cantata, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.
