Black Men and Boys Initiative

Launched in 2004, 21CF’s BMB Initiative works to advance a broad national agenda to break the cycle of disempowerment confronting America’s Black males in five interconnected areas – education, employment, criminal justice, fatherhood support, and health – by expanding leadership within the Black community itself and facilitating cooperation among activists, supporters, and allies. We address these goals through: 1) to community-based organizations in six target cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Oakland, Los Angeles, New Orleans and New York; 2) Additional that are working to bring greater visibility to community needs, best practices, and the creation of powerful tools to influence decision-makers and the general public; and 3) a national coalition and information clearinghouse that brings together local, regional, and national leaders, practitioners, and allies around a broad-based agenda to improve BMB-related policy and practice.
These activities are based on a comprehensive Logic Model that was developed for 21CF’s Black Men and Boy’s Initiative.  The activities all share an emphasis on: moving beyond discussion of problems to positive, focused action, shifting from reaction to pro-action in shaping programs and advocacy initiatives, nurturing a diverse cadre of leaders committed to helping potential future leaders claim and grow their own skill and power, pursuing strategies that look beyond short-term victories toward the development of power over time to effect sustainable solutions to the fundamental issues underlying immediate crises, and exploiting the opportunities presented by new technologies to spread knowledge and mobilize communities around critical causes.

Population(s) Served

The mission of the Gulf Coast Organizing, Advocacy, and Leadership Initiative (GOAL) is to provide targeted support to rebuild the lives of displaced Black people directly impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In the aftermath of the storms, the GOAL Initiative, formerly the Hurricane Katrina Recovery Fund, responded within days and began making general support grants to Black-led organizations engaged in community organizing, public policy advocacy, and leadership development around issues of education, health and reproductive justice, community-based economic development, and housing.
GOAL’s strategy encompasses three core elements: (1) strategic grant making; (2) capacity-building toward greater organizational sustainability; and (3) the Gulf Coast Fellowship for Community Transformation. While many challenges remain, 21CF’s support to grassroots community organizations through GOAL has led to significant policy victories that have impacted the daily lives of countless Black and low-income residents throughout the Gulf Coast. 21CF has also committed itself to continued resource investment in organizational capacity to build proactive leadership and advocacy strategies.
