Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Yara’s Theatre Pieces
Yara Arts Group creates, develops and rehearses a new theatre piece often inspired by traditional material we collect abroad or created by artists we meet. Our theatre pieces usually premiered at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York. The shows then tour to the region where we originally collected the material. Since 1990 Virlana Tkacz has created 40 original theatre pieces. Including "1917-2017: Tychyna Zhadan & the Dogs" named Outstanding Musical of the Year by New York Innovative Theatre Awards. Watoku Ueno has created two shows and ten puppet shows, while Tom Lee created eight puppet shows including "Shank's Mare" which toured to Paris, Hawaii and Japan.
Yara's Art, Music and Poetry Events
Most of the Arts, Music and Poetry Events we produce are essentially tied to our theatre productions. We find these events help expand our audience base and bring greater depth to the cultural exchange that is at the heart of each of our theatre pieces. They also allow us to first look into topics we are considering to develop as theatre pieces.
Yara Museum Exhibits
Recently we have been invited to create museum exhibitions. The first was to celebrate Yara's 25 Anniversary, which opened at the Ukrainian Museum in New York in 2015, and then traveled to The Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema in Kyiv. Since we have created "Kurbas in Kyiv," about a Ukrainian experimental theatre director from the 1920s, which was on exhibit from February-October 2017 at The Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema in Kyiv. We also created "Kurbas in Kharkiv" on exhibit January-February 2018 at the Yermilov Center in Kharkiv. Most recently, we created the mega-exhibition "Kurbas: New Worlds" October-December 2018 at the Art Arsenal in Kyiv which was seen by over 20,000 people.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We strive to create new theatrical pieces that are infused with traditional material. We have created over thirty pieces based on extensive research in Eastern Europe, Siberia and Asia.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We collaborated with international artists (premiere actors, musicians, dancers and storytellers) who contribute their specific expertise and also facilitate our understanding of the complexities of the local culture.
