Program Overview
The 34thStP's most prominent ambassadors are the white-clad sanitation workers who sweep sidewalks and curbs and empty litter baskets. A maintenance crew removes graffiti and flyers, maintains capital improvements installed by the Partnership, and maintains Herald and Greeley Square Parks. Sidewalk steam washing is provided. A security patrol assists the NYPD in preventing felonies, removing illegal peddlers, and eliminating quality of life offenses. The Partnership operates taxi stands adjacent to Penn Station and at Macy*s. The 34thStP presents performing and visual arts in public spaces, including FIRST NIGHT New Year's Eve festivities. Multi-lingual tourist greeters introduced over 950,000 visitors to New York City in 1997. A retail department advises property-owners and merchants on retail development and promotes district space to national retailers. The 34thStP is rehabilitating Herald and Greeley Square Parks with landscaping, benches, and other amenities. Floodlights mounted by the Partnership on the roofs of surrounding buildings light the parks at night. The 34thStP built major capital improvements funded by a $24 million tax-exempt bond issue, including handicapped-accessible curb corners, street lights, trees, planters, attractive newsracks and trash cans. The 34thStP contracts with the Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services Corporation to provide outreach to people in the district in need of service.
