Housing, Treatment and Recovery

The Day Rehabilitation Program (DRP) at St. Christopher’s Inn is a New York State OASAS-licensed outpatient program that meets 6 days a week, and combines cutting edge trends with traditional best treatment practices to deliver a quality of care that is second to none.

Shelter & Outpatient Treatment
The majority of Brothers Christopher in the DRP live in our shelter at no cost, through the generosity of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. This has many benefits, including the welcoming presence of the Friars throughout the Inn, reminding the men that no matter what they have done or where they have been, they are now in a safe place and they are loved.
As DRP is an outpatient level of care, it is far more economical than an inpatient stay. While participation in the DRP looks and feels like an inpatient program to our clients, it costs nearly 1/3 of a typical inpatient rehabilitation stay.

Since the Brothers Christopher live as guests in the home of the Friars, their length of stay is based on their need for treatment and is tailored on a case-by-case basis in partnership with their counselor and other professional staff at the Inn. The typical length of stay in DRP is approximately 75 to 90 days, with an average of 84 days.

Treatment & Activities
Men are typically in treatment for half of the day, while performing assigned activities (jobs) the other half of the day. Treatment includes individual/group counseling, a daily community meeting group, a meditation group and daily 12-step meetings. In addition, participants have access to pastoral counseling, the Family Program, Family Engagement Project, Smoking Cessation, yoga, vocational/educational services, GED program, grief group, weekly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy lectures and much more.

Aftercare
Brothers Christopher who are nearing completion in the DRP begin to work with the Aftercare Coordinator. The men are typically referred to halfway houses and sober houses to maximize the opportunity to sustain the recovery they have gained while at the Inn. In addition, some of the men remain at Graymoor at the San Damiano House & Farm, and some are referred to the Inn’s transitional living facility in White Plains, NY, Brothers Christopher House.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Since the founding of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement more than 100 years ago, wayfarers have been admitted without question, providing bed, board, and appropriate counseling for homeless and troubled men. Today, St. Christopher’s Inn (SCI) is licensed by the State of New York to provide addiction and drug treatment, and medical and mental health services, in addition to shelter services. Our overarching goal is to help men in crisis regain their dignity, sobriety, and moral direction and return to being productive members of society.

A key strategy of the SCI model is that while it is non-sectarian it operates in the spirit of brotherhood. The concept of brotherhood, of a band of brothers striving together in common purpose, permeates the atmosphere of the campus, and is one of the principal reasons for the success. Structure is another key strategy the program. Clients receive structure throughout their 90 day stay instilled in daily routines and in their treatment program. Part of clients daily routines is the assignment of a chore, which instills a sense of pride in the men while establish confidence and helping them learn a trade.

St. Christopher’s Inn has consistently demonstrated that its one-stop treatment model—integrating medical care, chemical dependency treatment, and housing—is extremely effective in helping homeless residents regain their lives.

The oldest free-standing men’s shelter in New York State, St. Christopher’s Inn predates the expansion of government departments to oversee and fund services for vulnerable populations. We are the only facility in our area integrating shelter, alcohol and drug abuse treatment, mental health treatment, and primary medical care on one campus, and remain a vital resource in helping men in crisis regain their dignity, sobriety, and moral direction.

St. Christopher’s Inn is a leader in substance abuse treatment and has provided quality services to vulnerable populations since 1909. Today, the Inn receives more than 100 client inquiries per day, hosts 183 men at any given time, and serves nearly 1,000 men each year. Most of the men we serve stay with us for a 90-day period of treatment and transition to an outpatient setting or special halfway houses. In addition to a new outlook on life, they also take with them the indelible feeling of having been part of a band of brothers with whom they struggled to overcome addiction. And brothers-in-recovery they will always remain. As part of our progress in providing care, we opened “Brothers Christopher House” in White Plains in August, 2013, a congregate residence for men transitioning from intensive treatment at SCI back to their communities.
