What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Big Apple Greeter
Big Apple Greeter's primary activity is its free Greeter program which connects visitors with volunteers. Greeters accompany business & leisure travelers (individually or in family groups) on informal 2-4 hour explorations of neighborhoods in all five boroughs. Visitors and Greeters are encouraged to venture outside of the usual midtown Manhattan tourist sites - traveling by subway, bus and on foot. The Greeter program intentionally brings visitors and tourism dollars to communities which typically don't benefit from tourism.
Since 1992, Big Apple Greeter's volunteers have welcomed almost 70,000 visitors from all 50 states, 100+ countries and in approximately 22 languages. Big Apple Greeters are New Yorkers of all ages and all walks of life. More than 300 New Yorkers serve as volunteer Greeters, while an additional 35 work in Big Apple Greeter's offices.
In 1993, Big Apple Greeter initiated its Access Program to address the needs of travelers and volunteers with disabilities. It is the only non-profit tourism initiative that intentionally serves travelers with disabilities. In 2002 the Access program began a partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide free Greeter services to Make-A-Wish families while they are visiting NYC for their "wish".
In addition to the positive word-of-mouth created by the Greeter program, Big Apple Greeter actively seeks positive media coverage about New York City in local, national, and international markets (travel guides, print, television, radio, and the internet). Big Apple Greeter estimates that it has communicated over 1 billion positive impressions of New York City worldwide.
