What we aim to solve
After School is our largest program, with a strong academic focus to help level the playing field for low income, non-English speaking immigrant children. It emphasizes English language development and core school subjects through small group work and individual attention. The purpose is to promote their literacy, support them in reaching grade level in other subjects, help the children see their own potential, and teach them study habits that will last through high school and beyond, so that they can be successful scholars and create for themselves more powerful futures. Other programs address a variety of needs including adult language acquisition, access to free immigration legal service, and Community organizing including Know Your Rights trainings and workshops that explain the constant changes in immigration policy.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
After School
After School addresses the needs of children in kindergarten through grade five by providing a strong academic program. This consists of homework supervision, English language development, tutoring, computer skills and social skills enhancement. Individual attention is the cornerstone of the program's success.
English as a Second Language
ESL classes are offered with free child care. The Center offers 4 levels of class from basic survival English to reading and comprehension at the level of a newspaper. The program is designed to be user- friendly and unintimidating for adult immigrants.
Parents and Tots
Pre-school age children gain socialization, language and basic English skills while their parents study English and participate in activities designed to enhance their parenting skills. Those involved in this program form relationships with one another which helps reduce feelings of isolation and displacement common among immigrant women.
Friday Night Fever
FNF is a program designed specifically to keep teenagers between 6th and 9th grade engaged and connected while ensuring that they are safe. At this socially vulnerable age children need a supervised social outlet which provides them with an appropriate amount of independence.
Summer Camp
Summer camp provides 5 to 12 year olds with a safe and educational place to to spend 5 weeks of their summer break. For our poverty level parents summer can be a difficult time since they often need to work extra hours over the summer months giving them few affordable and approprate options for the care of their children. Our program balances fun and learning helping the children to improve their English skills through the use of computers and cultural trips.
Immigration Legal Services
Legal services supports the vulnerable community of low-income immigrants by providing affordable, reliable bilingual immigration legal services. Helping to keep clients abreast of changing immigration landscape, our work supports the protection of human rights for residents who live in fear and with great uncertainty, especially as relates to employment and family. An attorney and social worker are on staff.
