Programs and results
What we aim to solve
CEU teaches and defends the values of open society -- free minds, free politics and free institutions -- in a world in which democracy and democratic principles are increasingly threatened by polarization and division.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Central European University
Accredited in Austria and the U.S., CEU offers bachelor, master's, and doctoral degree programs. There are also joint programs with other leading European universities as well as exchange opportunities and shorter courses for students and professionals from around the world. Educational innovation is part of the university's continuing contribution to the Central and Eastern European region as well as to the more than 100 other countries from which its students are drawn.
200 professors and instructors from 30 countries ensure that CEU students benefit from a rich diversity of ideas, expertise and teaching styles. With a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, CEU students have a small classroom experience.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Central European University aims to serve as a new model for international education; a center for the study of contemporary economic, social and political challenges; and a source of support for building open and democratic societies that respect human rights and human dignity.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
CEU supports its mission by offering a learning environment unlike any other. At CEU:
• Everyone is in the minority. At CEU, there is no dominant nationality and students represent approximately 100 countries—an irreplaceable environment for educating open, inquiring minds and encouraging debate and innovative research.
• Talented students have access to higher education, regardless of geographic or economic limitations. More than 90% of CEU students receive financial aid, and many come from countries in economic and social transition.
• Priority is placed on issues related to democracy, human rights, and civil liberties.
• Faculty pioneer cross-cutting disciplines and research to address tomorrow's social problems.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
CEU has excellent financial, intellectual, and physical capabilities for fulfilling its mission:
• Financially - As an independent and privately-funded University in Central Europe, CEU has a distinct vantage point from which it can operate freely and explore the open society values it is committed to advancing.
• Intellectually - CEU has 200 faculty members from 30 countries, and an exceptional student: teacher ratio of 7:1. Students can choose from 3 bachelor programs, 38 masters degrees, and 18 doctoral programs, five of which are ranked within the top 100 in the world.
• Physically - CEU is expanding its programming in Vienna, and is moving forward an innovative design concept to transform the Viennese Otto-Wagner-Area into its permanent home: a plus-energy-quartier that meets the requirements of cultural heritage management as well as facilitates cross-disciplinary/inter-department work by faculty and students and provides cutting-edge technology to all members of CEU's community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
CEU has established a strong track record over the last 30+ years—educating thousands of change-making alumni; gaining international recognition for academic excellence; and serving as an educational bridge from communism to democracy in Central and Eastern Europe. Ranked among the world's top young universities, CEU will continue to develop intellectually, financially, and physically in its next quarter century. As the institution matures, CEU will increase its sustainability and continue to strengthen its singular mission to advance the values of open and democratic societies - now on a global scale - and educate the next generation of engaged citizens to address the challenges facing democracy and human rights. In 2022, CEU will continue to expand its global operations in Vienna, Austria. The Vienna campus will complement CEU’s teaching and learning activities in Budapest and New York.
