PUPPIES BEHIND BARS INC

aka PBB   |   New York, NY   |  www.puppiesbehindbars.com

Mission

Puppies Behind Bars trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans and for first responders, as well as explosive-detection canines for law enforcement. Puppies enter prison at eight weeks and live with their inmate puppy raisers for approximately 24 months. As the puppies mature into well-loved, well-behaved dogs, their raisers learn what it means to give back to society rather than take from it.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Thousands of veterans have returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They face panic attacks, hyper-vigilance, nightmares, depression, and are often unable to function normally. Our service dogs are specially trained to mitigate the symptoms of PTSD and help these veterans return to productive and happy lives. Our dogs also learn a myriad of commands that enable them to address a wide range of physical disabilities as well as the psychological wounds of war.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to raise the most effective working dogs possible. The dogs go on to serve the public, either working with wounded war veterans as service dogs, or protecting citizens at home and abroad as explosive detection canines. The inmates who raise the dogs gain valuable skills, and benefit from the dogs' unconditional love.

We have trained inmates to raise dogs for twenty years. We learn from our past successes and mistakes, and from the end-users of our dogs, to constantly innovate and improve our training methods. We are small, and know every dog in our program intimately. As a result, we believe they are among the best-trained dogs available anywhere for their selected line of work.

Our staff of instructors include both experts from the service dog field and former inmates who intimately understand how our program works. We also have a network of more than 300 trained and experiences volunteers who help us socialize our dogs to environments they would not experience in prison

We have raised more than 1,000 dogs. More than 100 actively serve wounded veterans across the country, and more than 500 have gone on to protect the public working with law enforcement.
