DEMOS A NETWORK FOR IDEAS AND ACTION LTD
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We pioneer bold progressive ideas, reinforce them with original research and analysis, and equip grassroots partner organizations to move them into practical reality.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Freedom to Vote
Expanding the freedom to vote through support and enforcement of the National Voter Registration Act; supporting campaigns for Same Day Voter Registration; and pushing for an end to prison-based gerrymandering.
Upward Mobility
Rebuilding pathways to the middle class so that it is diverse, strong and expanding, through building systems for debt-free higher education, helping end credit card debt, increasing job quality, ending employment credit checks, and articulating the connection between race and wealth in the U.S.
Money in Politics
Reducing the role of wealth and corporate power in politics and policy with both short and long term solutions, such as supporting campaigns for public financing and creating public and intellectual support for a different interpretation of the constitution.
Public Investment
Rebuilding the role of public investment in creating a society in which we all thrive. Our Racial Wealth Gap project exposes structural causes of inequity in order to tackle and overcome them and our Climate Equity project is working to bring the jobs and assets-building power of clean energy to low-income communities.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
For almost 20 years, Demos has worked to reduce political, economic, and racial inequity, advance a sustainable, multiracial, progressive movement, and realize the promise of America. Here are some of our recent wins. 1) Over 3 million new voter registration applications have been submitted through public assistance agencies, 2) 51 innovative public policies have been proposed and championed, and 3) 10 pivotal court cases are currently being fought on behalf of the American people.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Through cutting-edge policy research, inspiring litigation and deep relationships with grassroots organizations, Demos champions solutions that will create a democracy and economy rooted in racial equity.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Campaigns: Through our work on Campaigns, Demos turns its ideas into public policy change that will have a positive impact on the lives of the young people, people of color, women, and working-class people of all races.
Litigation: Demos battles in the nation’s courts to tear down barriers to democracy, confront exploitation in our economy, and advance racial justice.
Partnerships: We work closely with grassroots organizations across the country to build a movement that enables us not only to win public policy change in our campaigns, but to shift the “narrative”—the very understanding of how progressive change can happen— for the long term.
Policy & Research: The Demos policy and research team develops race-forward progressive policy ideas and analysis for policymakers and grassroots organizations fighting for economic, social, and political power.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Demos' groundbreaking research has highlighted issues of inclusive democracy, the undemocratic impact of voter suppression tactics, state-level climate equity policies, analyzed dynamics of racist social exclusion, and highlighted the corrosive impact of money in politics both nationally and in local elections.
Our campaigns work contributed to the successful adoption of the Climate and Community Protection Act.
Our litigation has expanded voting rights.
Our partnerships work has built strategic grassroots partnerships with 24 organizations in 12 states helping them make dynamic interventions in the democracy reform movement.
