Ideas and Actions that Transform Brazil
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Brazil is a country of of continental size and very diverse social and environmental challenges. Despite its natural resources, the country has one of the worst income inequalities in the world. Marginalized communities throughout the country face lack of proper education, basic infrastructure and economic opportunity. In an effort to balance the budget and reduce deficits, the Brazilian government has been cutting funding for social programs. This scenario results in great challenges for NGOs: while demand for services is higher, there are fewer government and private funds available for NGOs, and many are reducing program offerings. The culture of philanthropy in the country still needs to develop. While Brazil is the 8th largest economy in the world, the country is in 122nd place when it comes to philanthropic donations. Philanthropy can play an increasingly important role in addressing social inequality and we see great potential for social transformation.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Grantmaking
BrazilFoundation, an international philanthropic organization based in New York and Rio de Janeiro mobilizing resources for programs that advance social justice and economic opportunity in Brazil. Since 2000, BrazilFoundation has raised over US$40 million, supporting the work of more than 600 social initiatives in 26 states in Brazil in the areas of Education and Culture, Health, Socioeconomic Development, Human Rights and Civic Engagement, and Social Enterprise. The initiatives supported represent the wide geographical and social diversity of the country, and work to solve critical issues in the communities they serve.
Along with financial resources, BrazilFoundation provides grantee organizations with training, monitoring, and evaluation in an effort to improve the quality of their services, increase the number of beneficiaries, expand their reach, better measure their results, and achieve financial sustainability. The Foundation also seeks to identify innovative and efficient project models, democratize access to funds, foster the growth of human capital.
BrazilFoundation also aims to promote philanthropy among Brazilians, serving as a philanthropic bridge between donors around the world and innovative causes in Brazil.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
BrazilFoundation seeks to reduce socioeconomic inequality, promote justice and expand opportunities in Brazil by partnering with grassroots civil society organizations working to solve critical issues in the communities they serve. The Foundation funds projects in the areas of education, socio-economic development, health, human rights and civic engagement. Selected organizations receive training, monitoring, and evaluation in an effort to improve the quality of their services, increase the number of beneficiaries, expand their reach, and better measure their results. The Foundation also seeks to promote philanthropy, democratize access to funds and influence public policy.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We provide grants to social leaders and organizations in Brazil that have a clear vision and creative approach to confront local challenges. More than just providing financial support, we work closely with our grantees to make sure they have training, capacity and support to scale sustainable solutions and become effective advocates on behalf of their communities.
Our investments are focused on serving low-income populations across Brazil, including residents of favelas and urban peripheries, rural areas, indigenous and traditional communities. Special attention is given to small and medium-sized organizations that often fly under the radar of other funding organizations and that propose local solutions to problems faced by their communities. BrazilFoundation’s funding strategies represent a purposeful effort to democratize access to resources in Brazil.
We offer different types of grants, including both funding for projects and general support, as well as participatory grantmaking through our Community Innovation Award and finally, we are one of the only funders in Brazil to offer grants for partnerships.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our program staff of 4 people in Brazil performs careful due diligence on each of our grantees, conducting site visits, analyzing budgets, project plans and performance indicators. Each grantee partner is visited at least once during the grant cycle and produces at least two progress reports on the grant and a final evaluation report.
We partner with ABCR (Brazilian Association of Fundraising Professionals) to provide capacity building in fundraising, marketing and communication strategies to our grantee partners.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 2000, BrazilFoundation has provided USD27 million in grants , supporting the work of more than 600 social organizations in 27 states in Brazil in the areas of Education and Culture, Health, Socio-economic Development, Human Rights and Civic Engagement. The initiatives supported represent the wide geographical and social diversity of the country, and work to solve critical issues in the communities they serve. The Foundation has provided capacity building and mentoring to over 1626 social entrepreneurs.
