What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
CLASSES
Classes are offered in three twelve-week trimesters. Classes cover a wide variety of academic areas including: Health & Exercise; Arts & Humanities; Science & Computers; Social Studies; Modern Living (finance, legal, leisure); and Day Trips. Some classes are one session while others span the entire trimester. Whenever possible, classes are linked in themes to provide a broader scope on the issue presented. Half-day special events are also offered. These special events bring together speakers from diverse fields around a single theme. They provide an interdisciplinary view on a topic of interest. Special events have been organized around such widely divergent topics as Chocolate, the Lunar Eclipse and Cats.
INTERGENERATIONAL TUTORING PROGRAM
The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring program directly combats the problem of illiteracy by tapping a rich resource, older adults, to reach at-risk children in the primary grades ? a critical time for students to build a foundation for success in school. Through stable, one-on-one relationships, these trained older adult volunteers build the children's self-esteem and foster a love of reading and learning. Working with the Long Beach Unified School District, OASIS pairs seniors with children in grades K-3 who have been identified by their teachers as having difficulty learning to read. The volunteers work one-on-one with the students each week as their tutors, mentors and friends. Tutors complete twelve hours of training in order to tutor within the program.
