What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

1in6 is a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting the estimated 1 in 6 men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault—whether in childhood or as adults. As it stands, we are serving a population in the tens of millions. The way masculinity is internalized often leads male survivors to repress their trauma and delay recovery. Moreover, the social stigma and silence around the issue of male sexual trauma results in a lack of awareness, which can create additional barriers to seeking help. The mental and emotional impacts of delaying recovery can systematically ripple out to every area of the survivor's life—and the lives of those in his community. Men who do not get help risk exposure to greater physical health issues, mental health issues, and social dysfunction.

1in6 Website

Developed by issue experts from Harvard University and UMass, the 1in6 website (www.1in6.org) is the world’s most thorough online resource (in English and Spanish) for the tens of millions of men in the United States who have experienced sexual abuse or assault, and for the loved ones and professional service providers who care about them. Almost 400,000 visitors turned to the 1in6 website for resources and direct support in 2016.
1in6 website resources include:
- Research-based, clinically sound online readings
- Free and anonymous online support programs
- Information and support for partners, friends, and family
- Information and support for professionals working with men
- 1in6 Library Bookstore of recommended books and films

Population(s) Served

1in6 is committed to supporting professionals working with men through a variety of programs designed to educate service providers across disciplines and increase the availability of clinicians trained to support men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. In coordination with other anti-sexual violence organizations, 1in6 has created powerful in-person presentations, virtual classroom experiences for students, and private workshops for individual agencies.

Population(s) Served

1in6 recognizes the importance of raising awareness through accessible campaigns, rich media, and culturally responsive creative strategies. By raising awareness, we not only break the silence and stigma around male sexual abuse and assault, we also introduce men and the people who care about them to the possibility of recovery and to a wide range of resources to help them get there, including our anonymous 24/7 advocate chat service and weekly online peer support groups.

The Bristlecone Project Awareness Campaign

The Bristlecone Project (bristleconeproject.org) is a collection of photographs, videos, and written narratives of men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. The purpose of the campaign is to portray who these men are now—living whole and meaningful lives —to the many men who may feel isolated and stigmatized by what happened to them.

Population(s) Served

The 1in6 website offers online support to men and their loved ones through our online support programs.

1in6 Online Helpline

The online helpline is a collaboration between 1in6 and RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest
National Network). It is the most targeted intervention program for men that 1in6 offers, providing free and confidential help and information about healing and reporting. The helpline also serves partners, friends, and family members of men. It is available internationally, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

1in6 Online Support Groups

1in6 Online Support Groups, another collaboration between 1in6 and RAINN, allow individuals searching for help to chat in real time, anonymously, and in small directed groups. This type of support group service is the first of its kind for men, and we are proud to be leveling the playing field in the anti-sexual violence movement by serving those who otherwise wouldn’t be served, including men limited financially and men in rural areas with limited access to traditional bricks and mortar groups.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

1in6 is seeking nothing less than a cultural shift—aiming to transform our culture's perception of male sexual abuse and assault as a stigmatized, private problem into an actionable community issue. Our programs focus on four populations: male survivors, their loved ones, professional service providers, and the general public. Our primary goals are to:

- Increase awareness around the nature and extent of the issue, creating public dialogue to reduce and transform cultural stigma.

- Provide comprehensive information and resources that support men, their loved ones, and service providers—connecting individuals with our support services as well as services from other providers.

- Expand the national safety net of services and resources available to male survivors and those who care about them—training service providers and building partnerships with other anti-sexual violence organizations.

Amplify awareness primarily through leveraging online, digital technology—optimizing information and resources to be widely discoverable through search, generating further awareness through crafting compelling stories that explore the issue and communicate effective strategies toward achieving happy, healthy futures.

Sustain, grow, and improve our digital programming which offers free and confidential support to men and loved ones—including the 24/7 national helpline, weekly online support groups, stories from a community of male survivors, recommended books & films, etc.

Continue to build in-person and online trainings for service providers in various sectors, including: military, education, law enforcement, health care, and faith.

Grow and diversify financial resources to support short and long term goals.

With development staff, a creative team, training team, and web developer, we are positioned to make significant and measurable progress. Additionally, our board of directors is comprised of program leaders and academic experts on sexual abuse, violence, and public health, guiding an effective and mindful approach to our work. We've strategically built a digital technology framework that's sustainable, scalable, and adaptable to current and future needs. We partner with other anti-sexual violence organizations to sustain and grow various programs.
