Moon in the Pond Farm has been in continuous operation since 1991 as a sustainable, organic farming venture. Early on, Farmer-in-Chief Dominic Palumbo became aware of the huge hunger, not just for sustainably produced food, but for education in sustainable growing. Dom was practicing sustainable growing techniques back in the 1990s, before it had gained traction in the mainstream. Passionate would-be farmers were approaching him, asking to work with him to learn his techniques. And so Farm Education Inc was born. Unlike other programs around the country, Moon in the Pond Farm’s Farm Education Inc doesn’t charge apprentices and interns. Instead, they come to work on the farm as full partners for however long their stay. They have a say in the running of the farm, even as they take highly structured classes in every topic they will need to master in order to become successful sustainable farmers. The Moon in the Pond Farm School Description of Programs runs 28 pages long and is encyclopedic. Apprenticeships last one year, while internships are usually one season. This benefits both students and the farm, which is labor-intensive.
