Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
1. City Bar Justice Center programs offer legal representation, advice, information and public education to low-income and vulnerable New Yorkers in the areas of immigration, economic and family justice. The City Bar Justice Center runs a free civil legal hotline, assisting 1,000 callers each month on a range of civil legal issues. We also operate the City Bar Public Service Network, which matches lawyers with nonprofit legal and non-legal organizations on volunteer projects. (Benefited: 25,000 people)
2. Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice supports a global movement to engage private and public lawyers to promote democratic values and to address public needs. The Vance Center advocates for access to justice; professional responsibility; a culture of democracy; Institutional fairness and transparency law reforms; equality of opportunity; and a legal profession that reflects diverse ideas and perspectives (Benefited: 175 institutions in 13 countries)
3. Lawyers Assistance Program provides confidential information assessments; evaluations and treatment planning; short-term counseling; intervention; collateral services to family members; referral; peer support; monitoring and educational outreach (Benefited: 216 people)
4. Office of Diversity was created in 2004 to work with NYC Legal employees to foster more diverse work environments. To date, we have 131 signatories to our Statement of Diversity Principles adopted in 2003-111 law firms and 20 corporations. It annually tracks the progress of Signatory law firms and law departments on key diversity representation metrics; hosts regular sessions designed to provide concrete tools to build an effective diversity effort.
Legal Hotline
The Legal Hotline offers free brief legal information, advice and referrals to low-income New Yorkers who can’t afford a private attorney. The Hotline is available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at (212) 626-7383.
The service is bilingual, in English and Spanish, and can handle calls in any language through interpreting services.
