Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Institution Building

Our culturally adaptable approach has enabled us to work on three continents to build the institutional infrastructure for civil society and community development. To this end, we strengthen non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to be “values-driven businesses” that provide quality services, mobilize communities and advocate for their needs, and generate sufficient revenue to support their mission and sustain themselves. Counterpart’s support has given rise to thousands of successful community-level projects that have delivered better health care, enabled citizens to engage with their governments and brought communities together to prevent conflicts and address their shared priorities.

Population(s) Served
Women and girls

Counterpart’s economic and natural resources programs use a communitybased approach to help develop sustainable businesses. By addressing both the economic needs and natural resource goals of specific communities, we are able to deliver tailored training and assistance. This approach helps communities foster economic development that can be sustained over the long term—and not only preserves, but enhances cultural and natural resources at the same time.

Population(s) Served
Farmers

Counterpart’s agriculture and economic development programs focus onhelping existing local businesses and farmers better meet the demands ofthe marketplace, and in so doing, thrive. Through small loans, training andassociation building, farmers and entrepreneurs have better access tomore lucrative markets, and are better able to meet demand for their goods. In many cases, these efforts not only improve local economies, but alsoincrease access to safe, affordable and diverse supplies of food.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

Counterpart is committed to building the capacity of civil society organizations to improve the ability of citizens to have a full and participatory role in the civic life of their country. Our work aligns with Goal 16 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals: to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

To advance Goal 16, Counterpart:
* Builds the capacity of civil society organizations working on behalf of human rights and inclusive civic participation
* Amplifies the voices of citizens advocating for government responsiveness and policy reform
* Helps governments create the mechanisms to engage citizens in decision making
* Strengthens civil society organizations to sustainably serve community needs
* Promotes partnership and mutual investment in community development among NGOs, business and government
* Strengthens the capacity of governments and civil society organizations to collaboratively fight corruption
