What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Waterproofing

Since 1993, Asphalt Green has taught more than 30,000 kids to swim for free. Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 14, second only to car accidents. Through Waterproofing, Asphalt Green teaches swimming to 2, 500 public school kids from Harlem, East Harlem, Brooklyn, and the South Bronx in 6 pools throughout the city. A survival skill, swimming is also a gateway to lifelong fitness.

Population(s) Served

28, 079 kids experience an active and safe recess thanks to Asphalt Green.

Due to a lack of space, staffing, and budget constraints, New York City schools do not provide enough physical education. As a result, teachers often struggle with students during the school day. Recess is a missed opportunity, but Asphalt Green is changing that. We reach students from 61 elementary schools in 4 boroughs, providing them with the physical acitivity they need to thrive, regardless of the school's challenges.

Population(s) Served

We provide instruction and league play in flag football, basketball, soccer and gymnastics to 734 middle school students in East Harlem, an area which has one of the highest levels of poverty in New York City. Kids receive instruction from the same coaches who teach Asphalt Green's excellent fee-based programs and are coached by teachers from their school.

Population(s) Served

Our 16-week fitness program allows our "young-at-heart" seniors to develop the skills to be fit. Seniors from Carter Burden Center for the Aging, Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center, and Union Settlement Association reported exceptional improvements in mobility, strength and flexibility at the end of the 2014 program. We are currently serving 105 senior citizens.

Population(s) Served

Asphalt Green provides financial aid for our fee-based programs. The two largest scholarship programs support our Summer Day Camp and the Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (AGUA) swim team.

Our Swim for the Future (SFF) Fund was created after two of our Masters Swim Team members, Andrew Fisher and Doug Irgang, died on 9/11. In 2012, Lia Neal, a nine-time SFF scholarship recipient, won a bronze medal at the London Olympics.
