Free Shakespeare

One of the oldest, free outdoor Shakespeare festivals in the country, SDP began as a college project, connecting students with professional actors. It has since become one of Western NY’s largest theatres. Each year, we produce two full-scale productions and one touring production. Our main stage season runs June-August, with shows occurring six nights a week for a total of 44 annual performances, while our touring show visits 22 locations across Western NY.
With 28% of city residents living at or below the poverty line, SDP is an asset to families lacking the financial resources to participate in many of the region’s cultural offerings. The nature of our free programming lends itself to accessibility; eliminating economic barriers allows participation across socioeconomic divides.
Since our inception in 1976, over 1.5 million theatergoers (45,000 annually) have connected with their neighbors through our work, producing an estimated $1.2 million in cultural tourism revenue.
