Mission

The mission of Sunflower Creative Arts is to empower children and families to be confident, creative and compassionate through Play, Nature and the Arts.

Notes from the nonprofit

Sunflower is a learning center, resource hub and preschool in Delray Beach, FL. Our vision is a world that values Play, Nature and the Arts for All. The pillars of Sunflower's educational philosophy are Respect for the Individual, Learning Through Experience and Learning Within Community. We focus on hands-on learning, fueling children’s curiosity and innate desire to learn, while simultaneously supporting parents and caregivers. Our work centers around three primary areas: early childhood, parenting, and bringing Sunflower programs to under-resourced students. Our on-campus programs serve young children and their parents, and we reach older children through community partnerships with other nonprofits and schools. Our parenting programs are both online and in person.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Sunflower's purpose is to advocate for and provide essential elements of a healthy childhood including hands-on experiential learning, connection to nature and process-oriented arts. Opportunities for child-directed play as well as nature and arts exploration are fast disappearing due to an increase in screen time, structured activities, early direct instruction and desk work for even preschool age children, and parental fear of letting children go outside. The results of these recent trends include, but are not limited to, increased anxiety, stress, behavior issues, loss of interest in school and learning, and obesity.

In June 2018, Sunflower Creative Arts launched the Sunflower Play Initiative to shine light on the profound power of play by being a play resource for the community. Our vision is to bring back play to every child’s life, every day. Currently, the Initiative focuses on expanding our Build & Play program.

We hold 60-90 minute weekly Build & Play sessions at local preschool and afterschool programs in under-resourced communities in Palm Beach County. Each Build & Play session invites children of all ages to create, invent, and build anything using their imagination and a huge pile of loose parts such as large and small cardboard boxes, lots of tape, fabric, paper tubes, yarn, art supplies, etc. Children are supported as they lead their own play, building their creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills in the process.

Current funders include Sunflower donors, Prime Time Palm Beach County and The Jim Moran Foundation.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Please see strategic plan. Below is an excerpt from that plan:

Owning our own property in Delray has allowed us to:
1) Expand the numbers of children and families we can directly serve through our in-house programs
2) Serve as a valuable community resource for educators and parents, expanding our reach and advocacy efforts on behalf of children and childhood

Overwhelming research demonstrates that play, which is fast disappearing from early childhood, leads to creativity, capacity for problem-solving, and love of learning. Through play, children learn to understand the world, heal from trauma and gain a solid foundation for later academic success.

Our campus provides a model of child-centered, play-based experiential learning which teachers, parents and student teachers can visit and observe. Local education professors and student teachers began visiting Sunflower during the 2015-2016 year. Sunflower’s Build & Play program, launched in 2018, brings the power of play to local children in under-resourced communities. Sunflower’s Bridge Journey, launched in 2021, offers meaningful small group support and connection for parents and caregivers. This strategic plan outlines our initiatives for the next five years: fall 2022 - fall 2027. It was created with the following challenges in mind.

Current challenges for children:
· Highly structured days with little time for play
· Dramatic increases in screen time for children of all ages (exacerbated by the pandemic)
· Increasingly sedentary lifestyles for children with accompanying poor health
· Disconnection from nature
· Rigid academics forced upon younger and younger children, including preschoolers, in spite of strong evidence supporting experiential, play-based learning
Effects of these challenges on children today:
· Increasing stress and anxiety among children
· Declines in children’s creativity scores and the loss of curiosity
· Increases in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and vitamin D deficiency
· Dramatic rises in the number of kids expelled from preschool for aggressive or extreme behavior – especially boys
· Millions of young children subjected to schooling that demands too much too soon. This is true for low income students as well. We are not reducing the learning gap with stricter academics for younger children; research shows we are intensifying the problems.

Please see strategic plan.
