Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Education
The Art Center provides educational classes and workshops in a variety of disciplines, including drawing, painting, ceramics, mosaics, mixed media, and fiber art. Our popular Starry Night Studio workshops provide a social painting experience where instruction is given on the techniques of a specific painting. The Art Center provides supplies for participants to create their own masterpiece.
Each summer, we host week-long art camps for children in grades K-12 that feature hands-on activities in music, visual art, theatre, and dance to ensure artistic engagement beyond the school year. Our Lisi’s Art Lab is a free creative space for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary school students with their families. The all-new Art Box provides a distribution mechanism for free art supplies for the community. Our robust field trip program welcomes 1,000+ students and their teachers to our exhibits each year.
In addition to hand-son classes, we host regular arts appreciation lectures, including the popular Lunch with the Arts series. This monthly series is a smorgasbord of artistic styles, forms, and time periods. In recent years, LWTA has showcased a ragtime piano performance, the Chinese pipa, folk music on the ukulele, and visual art ranging from the landscape art of Jon Carloftis to the glass works of Stephen Powell.
Outreach
The Art Center recognizes that many individuals face barriers to participating in the arts. We work hard to make arts programming accessible to everyone in our community.
Public Art - The Art Center continues to lead a community-wide conversation about the role and importance of public art. Our Art Local mural was the first permanent mural to be approved and installed under the newly-revised design guidelines for the City of Danville. The Color Wave mosaic mural was added to the building in 2019. We also partner with the City of Danville to help facilitate publicly-funded art projects on their behalf.
Scholarships - The Arts Center maintains a robust scholarship program to overcome financial barriers that keep families from participating in art classes and camps.
Art Box - In 2020, we added an outdoor Art Box modeled after the Free Little Libraries, which we use as a mechanism for distributing free art supplies.
Exhibits
The Art Center presents rotating exhibits that fill its three gallery spaces year-round. Each winter, we host a major exhibition devoted to showcasing artists from underrepresented backgrounds. Past exhibits have featured Black artists, Appalachian artists, and artists with disabilities. Other exhibits feature local/regional artist groups. The Art Center also partners with area art teachers to host an annual celebration of youth artists.
A robust free field trip program provides hands-on art experiences to more than 2,000 children each year.
