Creature Comfort Service

Creature Comfort Service: A.S.K.’s
proactive, mobile approach to addressing 24/7 outside dog care-taking
philosophies. A.S.K.’s hands-on approach drives relief supplies straight into
communities that have multiple barriers to providing high quality animal
guardianship due to lack of education, resources or financial status. The
animals and families that need the most support often don’t have the ability to
seek it out. Many of A.S.K.’s clients lack transportation, or regular phone
service making our direct-outreach services fundamental. A.S.K. focuses on
families who have dogs that are living an inadequate life outside 24/7. The
objective of this free service is two-fold: to provide immediate improvements to dog’s status to enhance their quality of
life while outside and enable guardians to transition their dog inside with
A.S.K.’s encouragement, education and hands-on training and socialization helheavy log chains, doghouses in replace of dilapidated or
insufficient shelters, new padded collars for increased comfort, pet food
support, straw insulation in cold months, tarp shade setups in the warm months,
spacious kennel setups to get dog’s off of short chains as funding permits.Subset
services include: Fix-It Blitz Service
free spay/neuter to 24/7 outside dogs at high risk of being intentionally bred
for profit, or for dogs that have had multiple litters as a result of
accidental impregnation by free-roaming dogs. This service reduces additional
financial obligations for the given family and prevents more homeless dogs in
our community.Home-to-Home Adoption Service: Dogs that do not meet the intake
requirements at our no-kill rescue partner facilities, or when those rescue
facilities have no available space for the dog, A.S.K. offers last resort
adoption help to ensure that dogs in the most desperate of circumstances find
secure, responsible new homes. A.S.K. focuses our assistance to families who currently
have a dog outside 24/7 that cannot be transitioned inside due to violations of
rental contracts, or guardian inability to meet basic care-taking needs without
continual outside support.

Population(s) Served

Providing
emergency rescue and lifelong refuge to previously abandoned domestic geese,
ducks and roosters. The illegal abandonment of domestic fowl is a chronic issue
throughout Michigan due to irresponsible novelty-buyers, and those that do not
understand the repercussions of abandoning birds that are domestic. Birds may
be acquired through 4-H projects, school hatching activities, farm & feed
stores or as Easter gifts. Domestic fowl like Pekin ducks, or Chinese Crested
Geese, two of the most common breeds abandoned, do not have true flight ability and must relocate on
foot when local food and water sources diminish. But because these birds are domestic, they
do not have wild bird survival instincts and are frequently found stuck
in ice sheets, ailing where they were initially abandoned, unable to get enough life out of the water in the winter! These birds require emergency rescues that pose public safety risk and considerable use of resources to secure hovercraft and safety gear required for their safe rescue. The abandonment of domestic birds also affects the genetic health of wild
species when interbreeding occurs, creating hybrids. Hybrids are then also
considered “domestic," flightless and incapable of long-term survival in the wild without human assistance.A.S.K. responds to
emergency fowl rescues throughout Michigan providing birds with high-quality
preventative and emergency avian vet care, predator safe refuge at our Sanctuary, and a vast
diet that includes both staple grains and fresh human-grade produce.

Population(s) Served

A.S.K. provides
the general public, lakefront associations, businesses and others, a toll-free,
24/7 resource in times of wildlife crisis. A.S.K.’s wildlife biologist provides
detailed phone consultations, on-site visits and recommendations to resolve
concerns with the animals’ best interests foremost. On-site interventions allow
one-on-one education about a given a wild animal’s natural habits, while
ensuring that only wildlife truly in need of human intervention are removed
from the wild. Humane nuisance tips are also provided to help people cohabitate
with their wild neighbors.A.S.K.'s services are requested throughout Michigan especially for humane, efficient capture of wildlife that are injured. A.S.K. specializes in challenging captures of ailing wildlife.
