Mission

Our mission is to partner with disadvantaged Guatemalan communities to provide greater educational opportunities for their children. GSSG partners with other like-minded organizations to support improved educational infrastructure for elementary and middle schools in Guatemala. GSSG also award scholarships to disadvantaged students, with leadership and academic potential, to attend Guatemalan high schools and universities. Opportunities for short periods of study in the USA will be provided if organizational resources permit. While in the program, all students will sign contracts covering the conditions of their scholarships and the expectations for community service focused on improving the educational opportunities for their fellow Guatemalans.

What we aim to solve

Poverty in Guatemala is directly related to problems in the educational opportunities for its citizens. There are two main issues: first, there is inadequate investment of resources in the Guatemalan educational system; second, there exists extremely unequal distribution of educational opportunities among the population.

GSSG's program tries to address difficult socio-economic problems in Guatemala by promoting an improved educational infrastructure in Guatemala and providing scholarship opportunities for disadvantaged youth, primarily from the indigenous population.

GSSG differs significantly from other organizations' missions in that, instead of working to supply ephemeral necessities, GSSG takes a very long-term view of how to assist Guatemalans in meeting their needs.

1) Develop a fundraising plan and budget to support GSSG's fiscal needs; 2) Develop a plan to expand GSSG's assistance to students attending Guatemalan universities; 3) Develop an expanded workshop program to provide team building and a broader educational experience for students; 4) Develop a plan for more efficient recruiting efforts through the new internship program; 5) Develop a plan for establishing partnerships with other like-minded nonprofits having education improvement as their missions to extend the impact of GSSG.

The major indicator of success of the project is the creation of a group of well-educated, altruistic leaders who upon graduation from college, commit to improving the educational system in their country.

To date, GSSG has contributed to the education of eighty-one disadvantaged Guatemalan students. Twenty-six students are now in colleges and universities in Guatemala, one is in Medical School and eight are in Guatemalan high schools (diversificado). Additional students will be added as funding becomes available. GSSG has also partnered with seven other organizations and is supporting teachers salaries, improved school buildings, and provided much needed school supplies. In December, 2019, GSSG sponsored a two-day workshop for forty-five participants. The workshop was held at Casa Damasco in Coban, Alta Verapaz in Guatemala. The nine presenters covered such topics as Poverty - Solutions; Tolerance, Acceptance and Inclusion; Leadership and Teamwork; and History of Overcoming among others.

What significant change resulted from feedback
GSSG scholarship recipients have provided input to GSSG in the form of written evaluations after attending GSSG's Academic and Life Skills workshops. Their input has allowed GSSG to refocus the workshop program to better meet the needs of our scholarship recipients. GSSG has also opened up the workshops to non-scholarship recipients, thus expanding our impact.
