Jerome CommUnity Learning Garden

The Grain Project operates the Jerome CommUnity Learning Garden (JCLG) in central Santa Ana as an outdoor classroom and as a food production and distribution site. The JCLG serves mainly low-income Latino residents who participate directly in urban agriculture in the comfort and familiarity of their own neighborhood. The garden is utilized by children, adults and families who participate to cultivate the land and learn basic skills in growing and harvesting fruits, vegetables and herbs through inter-generational collaboration. The garden workdays average between 20-30 residents who not only enjoy being active in a healthy environment but enjoy taking fresh and organic produce from the garden to their household. Participants also help maintain the garden as an outdoor classroom. Our free educational programming offers an opportunity for Santa Ana residents to become more aware of the importance of being connected to nature, growing and consuming healthy organic food, recycling, composting and self-sufficiency.We have collaborated with and provided the educational programming to local organizations such as KidWorks, Monte Vista Elementary School, and Santa Ana Public Library's TeenSpace to name a few.Through the support of Santa Ana's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency, we have provided six-week long classes to youth and children interested in gardening and food growing activities.
