Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Our Father's Children
We currently offer four programs that benefit North Texas children of abuse and neglect, ages 6-18. In 2012, we purchased a campground in East Texas called Camp Akiva where we currently host 3 of the 4 programs.
Royal Family Kids' Camp (RFKC) is a weeklong summer camp for 6-11 year olds. RFKC is part of an international organization based in southern California that provides curriculum to volunteer groups around the globe. The curriculum is designed to fill in the missing pieces of childhood for children of abuse and neglect in a camp setting, complete with swimming, organized games, arts and crafts, chapel, Everyone's Birthday, the Royal Tea, Royal Knights, songs, dance, and so much more. With a 2:1 camper to counselor ratio, there is a lot of special attention and time spent with each camper.
Onward & Upward (O&U) is a weekend retreat for 12-15 year olds that introduces mentoring relationships and has a curriculum for recognizing positive character traits, building self-esteem, and navigating middle school. Many of the children who attended RFKC continue their relationship with us in O&U, with many of the same volunteers they met at camp. We offer this retreat in February and September.
The SUMMIT is a weekend retreat for 16-18 year olds that enhances the mentoring aspect with a 1:1 teen to counselor ratio. The curriculum is based on life skills needed for these teens who have survived abuse or neglect to become thriving, productive adults. Various support systems for adults are talked about and various professional groups come as part of the retreat as career opportunities. Topics covered include: budgeting & money management, applying for jobs, creating an effective resume, mock interviews, college planning, exploring the military, and future outlook. We offer this retreat in May and October.
During the school year, we offer a mentoring program called Royal Family Kids Club for Royal Family Kids Camp aged kids on a 1:1 mentor to mentee ratio. This club operates from September to May with monthly club meetings and the opportunity for mentors to spend time outside of camp and club with their mentee.
