What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
First Time Computers runs three programs.
[A] COMPUTERS FOR LOW-INCOME KIDS [CLIK]
THE NEED. The hunger for education in low-income families is intense; parents view education as an effective route out of poverty, and see computers as an essential learning tool. But the reality is that few low-income families can buy a computer without making significant sacrifices. For most low-income families, the difficult trade-offs leave a computer off the list of immediate needs. The project seeks to address the concerns of these parents by making good computer systems available to them at no cost [we suggest a $25 donation], and facilitating access to the Internet.
TARGET POPULATION. 100% of the computers we refurbish go to low-income families and community groups serving low-income children and youth in areas of intense poverty in Washington, DC, Prince Georges County and northern Virginia. About 95% of our recipients are African-American, about 5% Hispanic.
[B] JOB SKILLS TRAINING FOR LOW-INCOME YOUTH
In the summer of 2006, we piloted a training program for unemployed teens in refurbishing computers. For the pilot we started with 8 in June 2006, meeting 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Four completed the training and passed the final test. In September, we hired all 4 on a part-time basis, working around their school schedules. Three remain on our payroll. We have since run several 3-month training sessions, and plan a major expansion of the program in 2009. We will connect graduates to local employers needing entry-level computer techs. Already one of our grads has been hired as by Circuit City as a tech. We now have a long waiting list of applicants for this program.
[C] COMMUNITY TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM.
Many community-based non-profits serving low income youth in the DC area need added computer resources; working through youth-serving organizations can greatly leverage our impact. We have served about 55 such organizations thus far. We've had requests for assistance from a dozen more groups and have recently received funds to begin addressing them.
