Mission

We have formed FRIENDS OF ANATOLIA in order to contribute to peace and democracy by providing support for the education system and for nonprofit organizations in Turkey and in the U.S. We also aim to create a mutual understanding among people of different backgrounds by using Anatolian culture and tourism as a unifying tool.

The most important component of democracy is civil participation, which requires awareness and a means of involvement. We believe this process starts with a good education and grows with well-functioning nonprofit organizations.

Peace can be achieved by mutual understanding and respect for differences, which in turn are fostered through cultural exchange.

Thus, our vision and mission are as follows:

Our vision is to contribute to peace and democracy by encouraging the growth of Turkish civil society.

Our mission is to strengthen community participation by supporting education, promoting volunteerism and philanthropy, and fostering cultural exchange.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Friends of Anatolia has three main goals:

1- Supporting the education system in Turkey

2- Strengthening Turkish philanthropy, volunteerism and nonprofit organizations

3- Promoting cultural exchange

To accomplish our exempt-purpose goals, our organization will engage in the following activities:

1- Good education = Awareness

Supporting the education system in Turkey will be achieved by:

(a) Improving the schools in underprivileged areas by coordinating physical repairs and providing materials (including books, computers, TV's, VCD's and educational software).

(b) Creating long distance educational opportunities and after-school programs with the help of volunteers.

(c) Supporting girls' education by increasing the enrollment level and literacy programs for women in rural areas.

(d) Offering financial support to students, teachers and research projects along with academic exchange programs at all levels.

These educational goals represent approximately 30% of our program activities.

2- Well-functioning nonprofit organizations = A means of involvement

Supporting Turkish philanthropy, volunteerism and nonprofit organizations will be realized by:

(a) Operating a Volunteer Center in the US, publishing a magazine, and organizing conferences to promote philanthropy and volunteerism in the Turkish community.

(b) Providing training for directors and volunteers of nonprofits on subjects, such as fundraising and grantwriting; time, project and volunteer management; legal issues; and strategic planning.

(c) Utilizing conditional grants to Turkish groups and organizations to enforce universal standards of organization and conduct. This will especially benefit ongoing local initiatives and people that know best the needs of certain regions and/or population groups.

(d) Designing curricula for certificate or degree programs in the Turkish universities to help youth benefit from academic education about nonprofit management.

These nonprofit, philanthropy, and volunteerism oriented goals represent approximately 50% of our program activities.

3- Cultural Exchange = Understanding

Creating a mutual understanding between cultures will be accomplished by:

(a) Offering courses about Anatolian cuisine, art, and dance as well as Turkish or English language classes; eventually developing a "Community Center" in the Bay Area.

(b) Organizing cultural tours, travel and study programs, and matching those who would like to visit Turkey with host families.

(c) Organizing social and cultural events including open house parties, picnics, conferences, seminars, and fundraising activities.

These cultural goals represent approximately 20% of our program activities.

Overall, more than 50% of our activities are in the U.S. Our overseas activities include educational projects and volunteerism programs.
