Mission

Project Well provides safe drinking water to an area of India where groundwater is contaminated by arsenic. Our water sources—based on traditional dugwell designs that are familiar to villagers—are inexpensive and easy to maintain. We make these water sources sustainable by developing community-based programs so users take responsibility for their own wells. We provide long-term guidance and assistance to users, unlike many other water projects that are installed and left unsupported. Project Well also educates communities on proper sanitation and personal hygiene practices, as well as the effects of drinking arsenic- or bacteria-contaminated water. Our objective is to make villagers aware and take care of their health through preventive methods.

Arsenic Safe Drinking water and low-cost toilets in Nadia and North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India

Project Well provides arsenic safe drinking water and low-cost single or double pit toilets to the villagers who live in the arsenic afflicted villages of West Bengal in India. One bi-tech/bore dugwell well that taps water from the arsenic free (top) aquifer caters water to more than 40 people. Twenty such wells have been constructed in 2018 providing water to more than 800 population. 40 low cost toilets have been constructed for the disadvantaged families who live in the same area and have no proper toilet. 20 more toilets are to be completed by the end of the current year. Training of the maintenance of the communities of these 20 wells will be done over a period of one year and at the same time awareness health programs will be done to inform the new communities on the pros and cons of drinking arsenic contaminated water and water containing pathogens so that they apply the disinfectant as directed. The field staff of the partner organization visit the wells, current and past, to monitor the water quality and record the user numbers to make the program efficient and sustainable.
