The Morning Report serves as a guide to the news coverage, analysis, and commentary produced each day by voiceofsandiego.org. It provides valuable context, brings people in on the narrative, and highlights local quality-of-life issues -- all in a humorous, easy-to-read style. VOSD's dedicated K-12 education reporters have made an impact since our inception. There is not another entity - nonprofit or for profit - that is providing the depth and range of coverage of education issues in San Diego County. We are more excited than ever about what we can accomplish with our education reporting. We have built a community of people interested in education issues. Our authoritative writing is framing discussions and forcing people to debate what will lead to the best outcomes for students. We have successfully hooked them into the narrative of what is happening at San Diego Unified in particular. Our strategic plan for 2012 takes us to the next level. We are looking to essentially double our current education reporting capacity. We are adding more in-depth investigative reporting to Emily Alpert's outstanding beat reporting. Investigative Reporter Will Carless is diving into the more complex issues, issues that are ripe for investigation.

Population(s) Served

New in 2011, we established The Deep Dive Fund. Investigative reporting is the pursuit of the stories that explain why things are the way they are -- sometimes people don't want those told. Each one of our reporters pursues that mission every day. But there's a special kind of investigative reporting that takes more time, resources and guts: the deep dive. We've regularly done this work from our inception but for the first time we've brought on a dedicated staff member to focus on these stories no matter where they take him. He's a familiar face to loyal VOSD members: Will Carless. Help us fund not only Will's position but the support he'll need to do the sort of meaningful work that spurs change and reveals uncomfortable facts. We need resources to pursue public records, acquire the technology to crunch large amounts of data and secure the legal backup needed to ensure bulletproof work.
