FRIENDS OF THE ROWLETT ANIMAL SHELTER
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our mission is to provide resources, programs and education to promote adoption and care of homeless pets in Rowlett and the Lake Ray Hubbard area. We aim to increase the live release rate at the Rowlett, TX and Garland, TX animal shelters by providing volunteers to help provide enrichment to reduce stress and market the animals for adoption.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) Program
Community cats are spayed/neutered, given rabies vaccination and ear-tipped. They are then returned to their locations that give them shelter, food & water. This is the most effective way to regulate cat overpopulation.
Cat Rescue Program
Sometimes the local shelter is full. Sometimes a cat has medical needs. Sometimes a cat needs socialization. This is where our Fosters make all the difference. Our Fosters provide a safe and loving home where kittens and cats can be cared for until they are able to be placed for adoption. Without our Foster program many of these cats might not get the medical treatment they need, and some cats may face euthanasia if the shelter becomes overcrowded.
Heartworm Treatment Program
Friends of Rowlett Animals pays for treatment for every heartworm positive dog adopted through our local shelter. FRAs is also adding one dog per month from the Garland shelter, in hopes to increase this in the next few years.
Emergency Shelter Pet Veterinary Assistance
When pets come into the shelter with severe injuries or health issues, we help fund the cost of treatment.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
FRAs vision is a world where every companion animal has a safe and loving forever home.
Our goal is to ensure the Rowlett, TX and Garland, TX animal shelters maintain a greater than 90% live release rate for domestic animals, which is the recognized benchmark for no-kill status.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We create awareness of the pets at the shelter, run a foster program for cats and dogs, and raise funds for medical care of these pets. All of these strategies aim to increase the live outcome of shelter animals either through adoption, foster or transport.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a strong relationship with shelter staff, and amazing support of our community. We have been able to raise enough funds year after year to treat the pets that come through our care.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Rowlett shelter has not euthanized a pet for space since 2014. This is an amazing statistic! We plan to keep the shelter at 90% or above live release rate while educating the public about the welfare of these animals and creating programs as needed to further the cause. We expanded our scope to the Garland Shelter in 2020 with the goal to help them attain the same results.
