Satchels of Caring Foundation

Mission

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of women with cancer in Allegheny and surrounding counties by addressing mind, body and spirit in the face of cancer treatment, by educating women about available programs and resources for early diagnosis and comprehensive cancer treatment, and, through shared experiences and hands-on participation, by fostering a sense of community.Through its Satchels of Caring program, the Foundation uses donated fabric, trim and labor to sew one-of-a-kind shoulder bags that are filled with practical, therapeutic and inspirational contents such as a soft turban (optional), a scarf with tying instructions, hand and body creams and lip balm, a CD of relaxing music, inspirational reflections, notecards designed by a breast cancer survivor, and a journal to encourage self-expression. We also include important resource literature that describes various national and local outreach programs (including referral services), online support networks, and information about free or low-cost medical services. Members and friends, along with civic and church groups, Girl Scout troops, cancer survivor organizations, and consumer science classes in more than 20 local middle and high schools donate their time and talent to assemble kits for sewing, fill them with carefully selected items, and distribute the satchels. Much of the work is done during community action days which are held throughout the year. Since its inception in 2003, the project has attracted hundreds of volunteers who have donated thousands of hours. From our headquarters in Downtown Pittsburgh, Foundation members and ""Helping Hands"" organizations have delivered over 8,700 satchels free of charge to women with any type of cancer in 19 different counties in Western PA through distribution partners like the Cancer Caring Center, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pittsburgh, Hillman Cancer Center and other UPMC facilities, Allegheny General and West Penn Hospitals, Gilda's Club, the American Cancer Society's Look Good…Feel Better Program, Hill House, St. Clair Hospital, Arnold Palmer Pavilion, Butler Memorial Hospital, Canonsburg Hospital, Washington Hospital, Excela Health Center Breast Support Group, and the Allegheny General Somerset Oncology Center.

Satchels of Caring

As part of our Satchels of Caring program, ""Helping Hands"" volunteers, comprised of students from middle schools, high schools, colleges, youth groups, sewing organizations, members and friends meet at volunteer sessions to select, cut and sew unique shoulder bags using coordinating fabrics, cording, trim and buttons, with a custom tag sewn in the satchel which reads, ""Made especially for you by the Satchels of Caring Foundation."" They are filled with therapeutic and inspirational contents, such as a soft turban (optional), a scarf with tying instructions, a prescription drug assistance and informational brochures, donated hand and body creams and lip balm, a journal, inspirational literature and a bookmark, and a relaxing harp music CD, then distributed to area women facing the challenges of chemotherapy. From the program's inception in 2003, more than 8,000 Satchels of Caring have been distributed to women undergoing chemotherapy.
