In addition, we have received funding to train Family Medicine and Pediatric Providers to conduct preliminary oral health examinations and to provide oral health education guides. An embedded dental hygienist will be located in the Family Medicine and Pediatric clinics to provide better cross-referral between Family Medicine and the EIDC and between Pediatrics and the EIDC. A long-term goal is to schedule EIDC visits on the same day as other service line visits to strengthen EIHC's Integrative Health Care Approach. This is especially when patients are hourly workers so they can get health care appointments accomplished in one day instead of two days, which can be interruptive to work schedules.

Eastern Iowa Health Center (EIHC) receives support to help patients achieve needed oral health care at Eastern Iowa Dental Center (EIDC) even when it is beyond the patient's financial capacity. EIDC accepts Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and serves the uninsured and underinsured. A sliding fee scale is offered to all who qualify. Most EIDC patients are government insured, uninsured or underinsured.
The State of Iowa has capped Medicaid dental coverage at $1000 per patient annually. When those patients need more than $1000 worth of care, there is an alternate funding source to assist. When any patient needs oral health care than cannot be paid for by other means, the alternate funding source is used to assist. EIDC serves all patients regardless of ability to pay.
