Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To be recognized as a premier partner in philanthropy by those who seek to use their charitable assets to improve the quality of life in coastal Georgia;

To act as community leader by identifying critical issues, seeking collaborative partnerships, and directing local resources;

To demonstrate deep knowledge of local nonprofits and to communicate this to donors and the community

To improve the nonprofit sector in our service area by increasing the number of local nonprofits who are managed with business-like attention to outcome measurement, efficiency, stewardship and board involvement.

To ensure that we continue to serve the community for generations by focusing on sustainability, organizational excellence and relevance.

Identify and work with local donors, prospects, and their professional advisers to develop a strategic, effective, and tax-advantageous plan for their philanthropy; Hold "widening events," professional adviser "lunch and learn" sessions, current fund holder referral requests, etc.

Concentrate grant awards to local nonprofits for capacity-building - to increase their ability to operate efficiently, effectively, and professionally;

Having conducted a community needs assessment that identified the quality of education as the most critical issue, to focus community efforts and resources on early childhood literacy and reading readiness;

Develop a strong working relationship with local nonprofits and direct donors with interests in their cause or field;

Build the total assets of the community foundation to $50 million and the unrestricted community endowment to $1.5 million by 2022.

A professional staff of two with combined experience in nonprofit management of over forty years and a combined forty years of living in the community

A board of directors representing highly respected and knowledgeable community leaders, professional advisers, philanthropists, and community volunteers

A solid relationship with the local United Way, and highly respected by local nonprofits.

Recipient of National Standards Accreditation for community foundations by the Council on Foundations

Member of the Council on Foundations, Southeastern Council of Foundations and the Georgia Grantmakers' Alliance

The National Campaign for Grade Level Reading All America Cities Award has officially recognized our early childhood initiative and given it Pacesetter status; We have also been recognized by the Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students (GEEARS)

Equity strategies

Last updated: 05/03/2022

GuideStar partnered with Equity in the Center - an organization that works to shift mindsets, practices, and systems to increase racial equity - to create this section. Learn more

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
