Mission

Our Mission
We are a non-profit dance company that uses professional dance works for the purpose of impacting people of all cultures in a positive and uplifting way. We are devoted to bridging the gap through dance between typically abled and (dis)abled people.

Our Vision
We bring together performers with and without physical and intellectual disabilities. With the incorporation of mixed abilities, we create innovative dance theater performances that challenge society's view, decrease prejudices and misconceptions while pushing all our dancers to new levels of artistic excellence.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Dance First

Participants will enjoy learning new skills in dance movement with an emphasis on the aesthetic or artistic appearance of modern technique in a safe and comfortable environment. Our instructors will be focusing on individual growth, and will incorporate Dance Movement Therapy techniques into each class. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their skills through performance opportunities open to the public.

Population(s) Served

(Ab)Normality is an annual Dance Theater performance that will take place in July at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, WA in 2017 and 2018. (Ab)Normality is a Dance performance consisting of a pairing of people with disabilities and celebrated local dance companies and artists. Various members of the Dance First and Low-mobility classes will create short videos that will accompany the performance, illustrating their relationship with dance and their experience choreographing within the groups.

Population(s) Served

Sixth Day Dance's Low-mobility pilot program will launch in the Spring of 2017. Teachers trained in paralysis & low-mobility best practices will mentor participants through the art of dance and dance movement therapy in this course. Student dancers will be featured in the Sixth Day Dance (Ab)Normality performance.

Population(s) Served

Public Outreach Performances will run throughout the calendar year.  Intellectually Disabled (ID), Physically Disabled (PD), and able-bodied dancers will perform in various public venues, attempting to reach as many marginalized populations as possible, both to bring the art of dance to diverse audiences and to reach out to new potential students and dancers.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Sixth Day Dance believes that the world of dance arts is enriched and expanded by inclusion; working to increase the participation of artists with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities throughout the community is one of our highest priorities.

We endeavor to reach as broad an audience as possible, as Sixth Day challenges people to see the contribution that people with disabilities can make in the arts and the wider society at large.

We believe that artistry becomes richer through diversity; we are reaching out to dancers who experience barriers of all kinds to participate in our weekly classes and peak performances. Sixth Day focuses its mission on producing and performing dance, providing community outreach to underprivileged youth and individuals with a disability, and providing excellence in dance education.

Sixth Day Dance has multiple strategies in accomplishing our organizational goals. Sixth Day recruits dancers with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities as students and paid performers. We partner with professional dance companies to create mixed ability performances and partnerships.

Our board members and volunteers meet monthly to maintain our business plan and calendar that reflects all of our planned projects for the next two years. The board and volunteers regularly revisit the business plan to ensure programs reflect the organization's mission, vision, various interests and growth plan.

Administration of Sixth Day Dance is 100% volunteer run. While we take pride in all our volunteers willingness and hard work, this is one of Sixth Day main barriers to expansion.

We are actively seeking financial assistance through grants and donations in order to fund a small administrative staff and scale our operations to provide additional classes, performances and partnering opportunities.

Sixth Day Dance company achieved non-profit status in August of 2005, and continues to strive for creative excellence through the use of dance. We are proud of our successfully created dance programs that broaden the lives of the students who take part in them. Our Dance First program is adaptive dance for adults with Intellectual Disabilities, and it has been successfully running for 9 years. A recent success was Sixth Day's new class in 2016 for dancers with paralysis and Physical Disabilities, which is funded by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

Sixth Day Dance has produced and shared dance through partnerships with The Union Gospel Rainier Valley Theater, Ballard High School, Kenmore Junior High, Pro-Fitness, Harambee Church, Jazz vocalist Sonya Kaye, Broadway Performance Hall, Project Dance NY, Westlake Dance, Freehold East Hall Theater, Mainspace Theater, Pike Place Senior Center, Miss Washington USA, Highland Community College, VSA Washington, Sound Mental Health, Velocity Dance, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, Bothell Landing, East Side Academy, Dance Battle Renton, ArtSpring Seattle, and Eagle Wings Disability Ministry.

Our past productions and classes have been funded by the Cities of Everett, Redmond, and Shoreline; the Renton Arts Commission; City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture; the Fremont Abbey; Allied Arts Foundation; smArt Ventures; the Mosaic Company; and funding campaigns through Kickstarter and the Washington State Combined Fund Drive.

SSD is supported by Fremont Abbey Arts, 4Culture, the Cities of Everett, Renton, Shoreline, Redmond. SSD has been supported by a Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, in kind donations by dancers, teachers, artistic directors, choreographers and cash contributions via Kickstarter.

Sixth Day has not yet be successful in procuring sufficient funding to scale our operations, administration and infrastructure.
