What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Sending free, high-quality books and resources to people in prison
Every year, Prison Book Program fulfills thousands of requests for reading material from people in thousands of prisons and jails in all 50 states and all U.S. territories. We maintain a library of 10,000-12,000 new and used books and strive to provide precisely the kinds of resources needed by requestors. High-request items include dictionaries (we send 3,500 annually), GED/HiSET study books, reference works, home building, job searching, self-help books, and more. We are the only provider of free books to people in Massachusetts prisons.
Developing and distributing resources for people in prison
For nearly 35 years, PBP has published and distributed the National Prisoner Resource List (NPRL) free of charge, in English and Spanish. The NPRL is one of the most comprehensive and frequently-updated directories of organizations dedicated to serving incarcerated people. Today’s NPRL includes contact information and descriptions for over 100 groups providing spiritual support, health services, pen pals, legal assistance, publication outlets, and more. PBP also publishes an 80-page legal primer called We the People which contains the text of the U.S. Constitution, an overview of state and federal court structures, a capsule legal dictionary, case summaries of important precedents, instructions on how to file motions, writs, and 1983 claims pro se, guidelines for legal citations, and more. We are currently in the process of collecting and developing additional resources for specific populations (Spanish speakers, LGBTQIA+ people in prison, etc).
National Prisoner Resource List
Our work is volunteer-powered. In 2022, 1,103 unique individuals completed 3,190
volunteer shifts with PBP, donating a total of 8,320 hours of time. Our volunteer program is not only the backbone of our fulfillment process; it is also designed to educate ordinary citizens about the lived reality of the American prison system.
