Erowid.org - Online Psychoactive Information

Erowid Center developed, maintained, and provided free access to an online collection of more than 85,000 documents, images, and other media files related to psychoactive plants and drugs. More than 13 million people accessed the information in this online archive in 2018. The collection contains essays and articles authored by a broad spectrum of contributors including health care professionals, substance abuse counselors, toxicologists, chemists, therapists, law enforcement agents, lawyers, anthropologists, writers, media, educators, and the general public. Note that our Experience Report project is tracked as a separate program service.

Population(s) Served

Erowid Center runs a laboratory drug checking program that analyzes the contents of ecstasy tablets, novel psychoactive substances (NPS), research chemicals, street drugs, and pharmaceuticals. Members of the public submit samples to a DEA-licensed laboratory and the results are published online at DrugsData.org and EcstasyData.org. The project also collects, manages, reviews, and presents laboratory testing results from other US and international organizations. The information is made publicly available to help harm-reduction efforts, medical personnel, researchers and the public. In 2018, 514 samples were tested through the project. These results were published along with results for an additional 528 samples tested by other organizations.

Population(s) Served

Erowid Center published one issue of our newsletter (#30) centered on information, articles, and statistics about Erowid’s Experience Reports project (project expenses tracked separately). Initially, we distribute this advertisement-free print publication to members. A full-issue digital version and constituent articles are later published online for free access by the general public. Thousands of people viewed/downloaded previous issues in 2018, and thousands more read individual articles online. We also distributed back issues at events and conferences and send paper issues world-wide for free to related organizations and events.

Population(s) Served

Erowid Center’s mission includes collecting, organizing, and preserving resources about psychoactives as historical records for the future. In 2018, Erowid’s primary digital document archiving projects included re-initiating involvement in archiving of Alexander and Ann Shulgin’s personal papers, documents, and books, transcribing and publishing two Shulgin Pharmacology Notebooks (11/B & 12/C), continuing progress on organizing and abstracting the archives of Myron Stolaroff, and accepting smaller physical collections of personal papers from anonymous experts in our field to be organized, indexed, preserved, and eventually made publicly available.

Population(s) Served

Tracking new psychoactive medicines, technologies, research chemicals, novel psychoactive substances (NPS, or incorrectly “synthetic drugs”), is one of Erowid Center’s areas of expertise. With the objective of educating the public on the risks and benefits associated with emerging drugs, we 1) monitor the availability, use patterns, and effects of these substances through consultation with volunteers, allied organizations, medical professionals, and online forums; 2) analyze chemicals through our DrugsData / EcstasyData program (expenses tracked separately); 3) coordinate between experts and researchers in the field; 4) educate writers and authors for media, news, and books; and 5) publish information about these substances online and in print.

Population(s) Served

Erowid Center solicits, reviews, and publishes first-hand reports of people’s experiences with psychoactive plants, drugs, and technologies. This project produces vital information about psychoactive materials as well as aggregate data about why and how people use psychoactives, both for current factual documentation and for the historical record. Reports are reviewed and edited before being published. Trained volunteers perform a portion of the reviewing work under the supervision of Erowid staff. The resulting data is used by researchers, academics, medical professionals, and the public for educational purposes and as source data for peer-reviewed articles and publications. In 2018, Erowid published 5,295 experience reports (more than any previous year) and ended the year with over 33,500 published reports in the collection.

Population(s) Served

Erowid Center provided direct education services by answering questions from the public via email and other communication systems. Erowid maintains a social media presence via Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, through which we publish new information, news and research updates, and answer questions related to psychoactives. We distributed books, information handouts, and teaching materials about psychoactive drugs, plants, practices, and technologies to members and the general public, furthering our educational mission.

Population(s) Served

Erowid Center conducts educational outreach in person with the general public at conferences, seminars, and festivals. In 2018, Erowid sent representatives to three events. Among others, Erowid staff attended an event at the California Institute of Integral Studies and provided educational outreach at one multi-day festival. Erowid staff also met with supporters, members, writers, and experts in smaller groups to discuss issues related to psychoactive drug education.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Erowid Center 's mission is to develop and provide access to accurate information about psychoactive plants, chemicals, pharmaceuticals , and technologies in order to educate, improve health, and encourage beneficial cultural reform. Erowid is dedicated to helping both the public and professionals educate themselves about psychoactive drugs.

Erowid Center directly educates the public about psychoactive substances—from legal caffeinated beverages to prescription pharmaceutical painkillers to illegal psilocybin-containing mushrooms. We also inform educators, including teachers, physicians, harm-reduction organizations, and community information hubs...in order to spread accurate information widely.

Our flagship project, Erowid.org, has evolved into a trusted global information hub. Because of our long track record and established rapport with diverse communities, people worldwide contribute articles, photographs, experience reports, and timely alerts about medical and law enforcement events. We actively gather the latest data directly from individual psychoactive drug users. We also track and compile current research and legislation. Since 1995, we have collected tens of thousands of pages of documents covering the history, science, and culture of these substances. The result is the world's most trusted public resource about psychoactive drugs and how people use them.

Erowid's resources undoubtedly save lives. In fact, this is one of the most frequent pieces of feedback we receive. In recognition of this, Erowid Center received a “Top Health Nonprofit" award from GreatNonprofits in each of the last three years.

One of our most influential projects is the Experience Vaults, where we have compiled over 100,000 first-hand descriptions of the recreational use of psychoactive drugs. The collection receives over 100,000 views per day. Erowid also operates the only program in the United States with DEA permission to conduct testing of anonymously submitted controlled substances.
