What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Through its programming, quality workshops, and a firm foundation for future success, the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center's goal is to transform the scope of nonprofit impact in Southeast Texas.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
First, the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center focuses on strengthening nonprofit leadership by connecting nonprofits with resources through educational workshops, consultations, library services at the R.C. Miller Memorial Library, and a network of partners. The Center offers bi-weekly educational workshops on nonprofit management and board leadership. According to the HR Council for the Nonprofit Sector, demand is strongest for training in the areas of board governance, grant seeking, proposal writing, sustainability, and fundraising. As well, demand is strong for leadership training and core managerial skills, including volunteer engagement and management. The Center offers educational workshops and resources on all of these topics identified by the HR Council for the Nonprofit Sector. Many workshops are offered free of charge at various locations in our four-county service area. Second, board performance is widely recognized as a critical ingredient in a nonprofit organization's ability to achieve impact. Thus, the Center works with local nonprofits to facilitate board retreats and provide board education to strengthen the governance and engagement of their board of directors. Third, the Center offers consulting services to meet the individual needs of nonprofits and serves as a resource center. Nonprofits are better able to deliver effective programs and services when a strong, core infrastructure is in place of realistic plans and systems informed by mission and vision. The Center's Executive Director works closely with boards and staff in response to daily requests and inquiries to offer management support services that are designed to build capacity through a personalized approach. Additionally, the Center is in the development stage of creating a coaching program to support nonprofit leaders to address specific organizational issues. Utilizing Executive Coaches to maximize nonprofit leaders' potential, support professional development, and resolve short and long-term issues in specific areas will expand the scope of the Center's services. Finally, to advance the nonprofit sector and improve the wellbeing of the community, the Center facilitates local collaborations and alliances. The Center makes connections between nonprofits and other entities to strengthen programs, improve efficiency, and tap complementary skills and abilities. Collaborations, alliances, and networking might involve partnering two nonprofits with similar missions to reaching out to the local media on behalf of a nonprofit to highlight their upcoming event.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
People are the most vital resource of the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center. Therefore, the composition, knowledge and skill sets of the staff, board, and volunteers are essential to meet the Center's goals. The Center's budget allows for the Executive Director and board members with the necessary tools to adapt their skills with the nonprofit sector's changing environment through competency enhancement and experiences. In addition, the region is plentiful with resources from which to draw from for guest speakers and topic development. The region boasts Lamar University as well as Lamar Institute of Technology, Lamar State College-Port Arthur, and Lamar State College-Orange as sources of knowledge and potential for alliances. As the Center continues to expand awareness of the nonprofit sector, grant writing, and the services it provides, there will arise a need to hire an additional staff member.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
For almost ten years, the Center has been a leading advocate, educator, and service provider for nonprofits throughout Southeast Texas. To date, the Center has hosted over 375 educational events for more than 7,500 individuals, including nonprofit volunteers, board members, executives and staff. The Center is embarking on a new endeavor in January 2018 as a satellite host for OneStar Foundation's Texas Nonprofit Series. The day-long summit will bring together nonprofit professionals, board members, and other interested leaders from the academic and business communities. Through its strategic planning process, the Center identified the need to expand its programming to meet the needs and requests of local nonprofits. Additional topics for workshops are being explored as well as modes of delivery. In addition, the Center's board plans to develop new partnerships and alliances with businesses, nonprofits, and government entities that will enable us to better serve the Southeast Texas community.

- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
