What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Embracing Our Differences Education Initiative

The goal of the Embracing Our Differences Education Initiative is to improve the lives of our children by teaching the negative impact of hatred and prejudice while helping them to become "up-standers", not "by-standers.” The program offers a variety of resources to teachers including free field trips to the exhibit. Working with the Sarasota School District, the program also provides a variety of teacher resources including workshops and lesson plans relating to art appreciation, character development and diversity education.Teachers who participate in our education initiative overwhelmingly rate it as a meaning and relevant educational experience.  Of 203 teachers surveyed in 2018, 97% felt the experience was either "outstanding" or "very good." As a result of these efforts, students have a great field trip, but also a well planned educational experience involving art appreciation, character building and diversity education that is presented before, during and after the field trip.

Embracing Our Differences annually presents an international outdoor art exhibit featuring 45 billboard size images created by artists locally, nationally and around the world. The art is a reflection of our theme "enriching lives through diversity." The 2019 exhibit drew 11,791 submissions representing 111 countries, 44 states and 239 schools, including such distant places as China, Greece, Israel, India, Iran, Kuwait, Romania, and Thailand. Hatred and discrimination are all too common occurrences on the Gulf Coast. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, in 2018 Florida ranked third in the nation for the number of active hate groups. The project helps facilitate a community-wide discussion regarding the negative impact of hatred and prejudice and the importance of becoming an "upstander." We believe there is a genuine need for this conversation in our community.

The Embracing Our Differences partnership with Riverview High School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Program and Coexistence Club continues to a be great success. The IB Program aims to develop caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The overlap in our two missions is undeniable and the relationship continues to grow exponentially each year. Under our Student Docent Program, students from the IB program and Coexistence Club serve as docents and mentors to young visitors participating in our education initiative. Student docents work in the park daily leading groups and inspiring youngsters to recognize the messages delivered through art. With their guided questions and planted seeds of inquiry, our young visitors are led to make realizations of their own regarding diversity and acceptance of others, including those different from themselves.

Embracing Our Differences is very proud of its many collaborates and especially with local educational organizations through its "Make-A-Day of It!" Program. Intended to maximize community assets, teachers and their students who attend the exhibit are afforded the opportunity, using the same buses provided by Embracing Our Differences, to visit any one of our partners: Florida Studio Theatre, Asolo Rep, Van Wezel, Ringling Museum, Selby Gardens, Mote Marine Laboratory and West Coast Black Theatre Troupe.

Partners use this opportunity to relate their programs to the Embracing Our Differences experience thereby providing a full day of character education. For example, Mote Marine and Selby Gardens demonstrate diversity in the sea and gardens while Van Wezel School-time performances focus on bullying and diversity.  While the expense is minimal, the additional educational experience is priceless.
This asset sharing program is unique in Southwest Florida with 6,955 students benefiting in 2018.
