Green Fleets
The Michigan Green Fleets program brings advanced transportation
technologies and alternative fuel solutions to fleets throughout
Michigan. Clean Energy Mobility is managing this U.S. Department of
Energy program—funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act—to
deploy clean-fueled vehicles and build the necessary fueling
infrastructure to support them.
This four-year, $40 million project brings together a diverse
cross-section of Michigan fleets, which are adopting propane, compressed
natural gas and hybrid vehicles. Throughout the year, Green Fleets
partners will put more than 500 cleaner vehicles on the road and build
more than 50 alternative fueling stations to support them. In addition
to cleaner air and reduced dependency on foreign oil, Michigan Green
Fleets is commercializing cutting-edge technology and manufacturing
capability, all while creating jobs right here in Michigan.
Based on data drawn from an Argonne National Laboratory model, Clean
Energy Mobility expects to displace at least 1.5 million gallons of
petroleum per year, and more than 13 million gallons during the
anticipated average 10-year equipment life cycle.
The project’s vehicles will have a significant reduction of pollution-causing emissions in the following ways:
Reduce 261,560 pounds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions annually – over 2.6 million pounds over the life cycle
Reduce 10,933,642 pounds of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions annually – over 109 million pounds over the life cycle
Reduce 156,859 pounds of particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions annually – over 1.5 million pounds over the life cycle
Reduce 102,611,815 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually – over 1.02 billion pounds over the life cycle
Reduce 2,360,232 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually – over 23.6 million pounds over the life cycle
Michigan Clean Cities
Clean Energy Coalition manages three of the Clean City programs in Michigan: Ann Arbor Clean Cities; Detroit Clean Cities and West Michigan Clean Cities.
Clean Cities strives to advance the nation’s economic, environmental and energy security by supporting local decisions to adopt practices that contribute to the reduction of petroleum consumption. Clean Cities has a network of nearly 100 volunteer coalitions, which develop partnerships in the public and private sectors to promote alternative and renewable fuels, fuel economy measures, idle-reduction technologies and new technologies as they emerge. In the past 15 years, Clean Cities coalitions and stakeholders have displaced more than 2.4 billion gallons of petroleum. In 2008 alone, roughly 412 million gallons of gasoline were displaced as the result of coalition activities.
Ann Arbor PACE Program
In 2010, Michigan passed Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) legislation, enabling local governments to create energy-financing districts and provide loans to commercial and industrial property owners for energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy systems.
In partnership with the City of Ann Arbor, Clean Energy Communities is designing and implementing Michigan’s first commercial PACE program, which allows commercial property owners to finance building energy efficiency and renewable energy projects through a local property assessment.
Widespread adoption of PACE funding will help boost construction and clean energy jobs, drive economic stimulation, improve property values, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Better Buildings
Clean Energy Structures is coordinating energy assessments and efficiency upgrades with homeowners through a series of nine neighborhood sweeps in five communities. BetterBuildings for Michigan aims to create a vibrant, growing and sustainable market for quality, deep energy efficiency retrofits on residential buildings across Michigan.
Additionally, BetterBuildings for Michigan is designed to:
Provide access to incentives and affordable loans for efficiency upgrades
Engage communities throughout the state
Create jobs and drive economies of scale
Test incentive and marketing strategies that drive demand for energy efficiency
BetterBuildings for Michigan uses a community approach to deliver energy efficiency improvements for homes and businesses by providing access to incentives and affordable loans.
Plug-In Ready Michigan
Clean Energy Coalition was selected by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to work with a coalition of more than 40 regional project partners to create an electric vehicle infrastructure readiness plan for Michigan.
Since the launch of this project, Clean Energy Coalition has been working with project partners to identify existing barriers and opportunities related to planning, zoning, codes, permitting, and utilities. As part of this effort, the team held a series of stakeholder meetings, completed a Michigan-specific forecasting study, and conducted a survey of Michigan’s municipalities to help gauge the level of awareness and on-the-ground readiness for electric vehicle deployment.
The final plan (expected release date: September 2012) will provide the necessary information and tools to planners, local officials, consumers, and private enterprises to prepare for an increase in plug-in electric vehicle use.
