Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Junior League

BTS is the only middle school wrestling league in NYC. In partnership with the Department of Education, we provide after-school programming for middle school kids in the form of practices and competitions focused on learning the basics of wrestling in a safe, fun environment.

BTS provides the coach, equipment (mat, shoes, uniforms), and organized competitions.

Our league ranges from 40-60 teams per year.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

In partnership with the Department of Education, BTS provides Public Schools Athletic League teams in their first year with uniforms and mats, and we provide "tournament kits” to all PSAL Teams, allowing them to run their own tournaments. We sponsor the NYC Mayor’s Cup Tournament, the PSAL trip to the Eastern States Classic, and the NYC Gotham City Girls Open, one of the premier girls tournaments in the country.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents

The Training Center is a year-round program available to Beat the Streets Members that provides free-of-cost coaching, competition prep, and support. As a hub of the NYC scholastic wrestling community, the Training Center offers student-athletes the unique opportunity to train with those from different schools across the five boroughs, as well as the chance to learn from elite coaches and clinicians of NCAA, World, and Olympic caliber.

Population(s) Served

We make it possible for BTS members to participate at inner-city non-PSAL tournaments, regional tournaments, and national tournaments, as well as college visits and other educational trips.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

BTS adds to students’ development off the mat through SAT Prep Tutoring, college visits, Life Skills Workshops, Wrestler’s Mark Character Awards (awards at camps and Junior League competitions that draw parallels between wrestling and life), and the Jefferson Awards Program (leadership development and community service for 50 of our middle school student-athletes).

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

We send qualifying wrestlers to college-run sleepaway camps, where they enjoy wrestling training and off-the-mat education on topics such as college access and leadership training.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

We provide on-site coach mentoring, online resources to improve their teaching technique, and seminars throughout the year.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Launched in 2019, the Beat the Streets Academy aims to prepare student-athletes for success both on and off the mat.

Open to dedicated middle school and high school student-athletes across all five boroughs, the Academy teaches the skills necessary to succeed in wrestling, graduate high school, and pursue post-secondary study. Beat the Streets serves youth of color from low-income backgrounds, who statistically are more likely to face barriers to graduation and college entry.

The Academy meets year-round after school, on weekends, and over school breaks. Academy student-athletes receive additional practice time and support including life-skills and college readiness workshops, college visits, travel competition opportunities, social events, and more. The program is structured around 10 Academy Days, which are full-day leadership workshops featuring group activities, discussions, and guest speakers.
